Never could get privateer to work on my computers (might get around to trying that remake thingy). But Wing Commander rocks.

Seems so long ago but I earned the money to buy WCIII by water blasting a tennis court. It has recently been waterblasted again but because it was left for so long (and the court is now quite old) lots of the green paint came off with the lichen.

Ahh, fond memories (of blasting stuff in WCIII and enjoying the interactive movieness of it, not the waterblasting). I think you'll feel right at home rdodd, welcome to the forums.

Well you don't know unless you try. At least now you have something to aim for. Try checking out a warzone, they are generally much safer than Pearl (evil grin?). Learning to jump at an optimal angle and with the right velocity vector to dock as quickly as possible really helps.

But there is a way to dock even faster than that. If you face and put your velocity directly along the SX or SZ axis and then right click on the station you can offset one of the coordinates so you dock almost instantly. If you offset it too much, you will pass through the station before it is able to grab you. It only takes a couple of practice jumps to figure out how to do it. Then you can enter the station straight away and be safe, doesn't matter what reds have spawned around you. The reds only have time to intercept you if you take your time getting to the dock or spend a long time in it but out in the open. I don't bother using this technique much, lining up my jump vector on the way in and jumping out as soon as I am done is enough to get around in any old tin can aka talon with a level 1 shield. Heavier frames just let you be sloppy, though I do get a good feeling just ignoring the angry navy ships while I calmly transact my business in my Evoch with level 10 shields.

EDIT: Yummy, splashed vonarii for breakfast. Washed down with a nice cup of shot down missile fragments.

OK, so I'm trying this out. I have about 750K credits in the bank. I decided I was going to try and find the Pearl system. I went Sapphire -> Thuban -> Virgo. Now I'm in the Virgo system and I can't find the gate to Rucker. How do I discover unknown gates? I've looked on the site with the maps, but the Virgo system isn't up yet. Can anyone help me?

Thanks in advance!

The gate to Rucket ate not hiddind. You either over look it on your nap or went to the wrong sector and think you are in Virgo. Sorry I can not be of more help right now since o am not home to look it up.

Second thing you can do is save your game then jump on MP. Someone there will be able to help you out in no time. Once you found what you are looking for then you can either stay on MP, or save and relog back to Sp

Well, the Virgo - Rucker gate is fairly visibile. Maybe it's just near a planet or a station...look closer by pressing right mouse button on a sector

Edit: this is my 100th post wohoooo! LOL :D

OK, I feel dumb. It was near a planet and I couldn't see it on the map without zooming in. I didn't know I could zoom in on a sector of the map by right clicking! Once I did that I found it! Now I just have to figure out how to dock in Pearl before I get blown up! :P

Turning text on for gates can help you identify what ones are available without zooming in to an individual sector.

To dock without getting blown up right click in the nav map where you want to dock and make sure you are pointed in the direction of your motion and along the ecliptic before you jump. You should be able to dock and enter the station before anyone has time to send a missile your way. Juts don't hang around docked but outside of the station.

I hate races, but it's good for getting some skill in maneuvering the ship.
From a rookie to a rookie: ;)
I don't advise to use Inertial mode. You need to control the ship and for maneuvering it's easy and better if you use IDS mode.
Never use afterburner before a curve, like when driving real cars.
Use it when there's a line of straight rings.
I use a lot of the rudders (roll) when I'm getting near the edge of the ring, to pull the ship to the center of the ring. Try to keep always in the center.
Avoid looking to your opponent race, just stay focus in your flying.
I think you don't need to buy a special wings or engine. But it will help if you do an upgrade to both.
Is there anyway to SKIP the IMG Race? I got beat 13 times now and want to just pass on it and do the other IMG quests....no easy mode for the game. LOL.

There no way around the race or any IMF quest. It inplace to make sure you know how to control your ship. If you think the race is hard now, wait till you get into combat.

With that said it really not that hard to pass the race nor combat. All you really need to know ate how when to use what. Really learn from your mistake and try something else if something you try before does not work for you.

Leave IDS mode on during the race use afterburner where you can use more speed and "/+ afterburner" to slow your ship down fast. So afterburner when you can usethe speed then reverse afterburner where you need to slow down fast

I know this is insane, but I just lost my 28th I.M.G. race today. Would be nice if the npc pilot was a novice too and not an expert. He keeps bumping me from behind and I go off course fly outside of the race tunnel.
I'm thru and a bit burned out with I.M.G races until the weekend comes...that way I can capitalize on the hour of daylight savings time. I put a sign on my desk that says, "bang head here". LOL

 Used to be (in Legends) that a timed race was easier. Not so in Mercenary ... racing against an AI is easier. Just pass the guy up at the start of the race and don't look back. Keep your eyes on the track and use afterburner in short spurts. You do not want to fall out of the race course.

I was having trouble with the race too, and I finally completed it tonight. Do as was posted above, use the afterburner in spurts. The opponent did knock me off the track very early in the race, but I was able to get back going quickly and by just tapping the afterburner thru most of the track I was able to finish ahead. I let the afterburners burn a bit longer on the straightaways, but not much.

I failed the race at least a dozen times too before I got it. I gave up and went off and did some mining and training. Then I came back after leaving it for a while and I had MUCH better luck.

Good luck to you!

I finished the first combat IMG mission, and now it's off to the second. I BARELY survived the first one so I don't know how I'm gonna fare on the second...

Combat we can help, but the race you are on your own.

Hmm try to change wings. You may want a higher lvl wings for better turn and lose the cargo space so you have less weight.

As for combat. You can hire wingman or log on MP for help. Keep in mind that you can take as long as you like to complete the contract. If you get too damage you can use reverese after burner to keep a bit of distience between you and the enemies to give your repair systerm time to repair. This also help make them fire their missile into space and you ready to get back into the fight you don't have to worry about their missile since they use out.

In multiplayer gameplay, does the game save your progress, things you make, purchase, and sell that you can use when you play in single player mode later?

Thanks.

Hello Logan. Yes. Everything you do transfer between SP and MP except Building stations and such.

What time of the week and day do most people play online? I just looked a min ago and see 4 hosted games, each have no people playing on them. I checked by right clicking each to see the status.

Thanks.

I'm not sure, but I'm in Europe and go on late nights. I play on the Remula 1 server and it varies between 4-10 players when I'm on.

US players probably work right now and I think they are majority amongst players.
