Potential new player with Combat concerns

Post by Wedge598 »

As an update:

I've not gotten pretty comfortable with combat. In fact, having found the Excaliber missles, I dare say that combat has taken big turn toward the easier side. The combat technique I've been employing feels a little cheap when compared to how previous games have played out.

When taking on a groupt of enemies I'll coast in at full speed on inertia and let loose with a volley Excals as I chafe and shoot down their missles on the way by. Once out of their range I reverse direction and do it again until they are down to just a few fighters left. At that point I'm confident enough with my level 9 shield and Centurion Hull to take them on with guns. The ship is a little sluggish but manages to still keep up with well enough to pop them with my Phantom Cannons.

If the group is 10-12 large I'll bring along some hired help and execute a similar tactic in a triangular path that will lead the group back to my wingmen who can then take 2 or 3 out for me.

It's a pretty safe tactic as I can usually take down the entire group without being hit. But it feels a little cheap if I don't get in there and mix it up with at least a couple of them.

Early in the game using missles was something I avoided as they were expensive. After finding some Exodus crates I began using them more often but tried to limit it because I didn't want to have to go back to reload. Now, with regenerating missles there is no reason not to use them and it almost becomes essential to surviving against huge odds.

* SPOILER/HINT *

The game turns a big corner for the new player once they make their way to Cerulean. In that one system you can make loads of money and find invaluable containers and ship frames.

And you have no problem with escort missions ... getting the job done before the bad guys destroy the ship you're escorting? Also, if you think Excals are always the answer, take on some of our cloaked adversaries in MP.

You completely misinterpreted my post if you thought I was trying to be cocky. On the contrary, I feel like my tactic could be easily exploited by just anyone online and on top of that this tactic only works against large groups of enemies that stay in one group. I feel like I've found a cheap exploit to defeat those interceptor groups but still feel inadequate to take on some of the other mission types.

I have successfully defended one capital ship but that felt more like luck.

This post was more about describing my journey from complete inadequacy to competent AI buster. Still not sure about going online. I'd love to take on some co-op missions but really have no interest in PvP battles or getting annoyed by Romulan. So for now I'm sticking to the single player mode.

:cool: Not cocky ... just thought you hadn't considered some of the other missions.
