IT'S WORKING!

Finally managed to get it going. Works great. I contacted the developers and they gave me a few tips which I'll post here for anyone else who wants to use voice recognition.

As Vice and others said above it has to be the version of e-speaking from the above link (for XP 3.8....). Not the Vista version (3.9...). Both versions run on Vista but only the 3.8.... works with Evochron Legends.

If you're using XP then you also need to install SAPI (Microsoft Speech SDK v5.1) and Microsoft .NET Framework, both links can be found at www.e-speaking.com.

If you're using Vista there's no reason to install SAPI or .NET as they are aleady there as part of the operating system.

IMPORTANT for Vista users: go to control panel>ease of access>speech recognition options>advanced speech options>click speech recognition tab, and select "Microsoft Speech Recognizer 8.0 for Windows (English - US)". It must be US! If it's UK it won't work. (This took me ages to finally realise!!)
XP users should probably select "Microsoft Speech SDK v5.1".

If you're using a non-english keyboard (like me - spanish) don't use any non-english characters when adding keyboard commands to e-speaking... it doesn't like that. You'll get error messages saying it couldn't load the grammar file, and should it regenerate the grammar file. If that happens you have 2 options: 1) Yes, regenerate the grammar file, but you'll lose any new commands you added; 2) Make a backup copy of the XML grammar file (located in your My Documents folder and called "e.Speaking Commands.XML". Then delete the original, and restart e-Speaking.

Finally, when it is working you'll have a bit of trial and error to configure the commands, as Vice said above. For example to engage the jump drive (F2) you'll need to specify how many times to press the key, and how long to hold the key down, eg: {F2,1,100} So F2 key, press once, hold down for 100 ms. Don't forget the { } (otherwise won't work). If it's not held down for long enough (eg 10ms) nothing will happen or sometimes it will work and sometimes not. If it's held down too long (eg 200ms) you'll get your jump drive trying to engage again several times in succesion! The optimum time depends on different commands.

Overall e-Speaking can be a bit glitchy sometimes, but it generally works fine once you've got to know it's temperaments (maybe it's that time of the month, etc). And it's a great feeling when you can talk to your ship's computer... adds more fun! Although be careful about programming it to confirm your commands (in the middle of a mass red attack... me:"maximum jump!". Ship's computer: "Should I engage maximum jump?". me:"Yes, *! Get us the * out of here!!". Whoooooosh!!

Well hope this may be of use to someone!

It's very immersive. I have mine programmed to give verbal responses to my commands.

I say "Computer"
She responds, "Aye sir"
I say "Navigation console"
She says "Navigation console onscreen"

Hehe, I say "Computer" all the time just to hear her say "Aye sir" Makes me feel important :)

;) You'd think somebody with a name like Zaphod could come up with a more creative reply. Something Eddie (shipboard computer for the Heart of Gold)* might say.

Actually I do have an Eddie profile, haha. But it doesn't work all that well. I downloaded a male British voice, and programmed it to say "I'd be happy to sir" and all that, but the voice isn't cheerful enough. :) It also seems to glitch up for some reason.

As for using it to launch missiles and such... no, I don't recommend it. There is a delay of about half a second or so. I'd suggest just using it to open menus, and do little maintenance tasks. I programmed mine so that I basically never take my hands of the HOTAS, except to use the mouse to choose coordinates occasionally.

I've got "Shoot" up and running, made my own profile. Works very well. I also created a profile for "Aces High" (online ww2 flying) which works good, too.

Hey, So i just found out about this software and it seems like a great idea.

I can get it to work on my computer and in other games but no luck in EVO. Did a recent patch stop this from working or do i need to do something in my computer?

Vista 64bit, version 3_8_17.

I am trying to get this to work before I buy Evo, my TrackIR works, just want this. Thanks for any help!

Worked fine for me, maybe it's a Vista64 thing. If you install the right version and configure it correctly for the game, then it still won't work, I'd suggest contacting the author at the link near the bottom of the first page in this thread. He's been very helpful in the past and can probably get it sorted.

Make sure you give the commands the 100ms option also.

eg: {F2,1,100} So F2 key, press once, hold down for 100 ms

Thanks for the quick response. I have tried the 100ms and varying times in between. Its a shame because I can get it to work in EVE just not EVO. I will send a message to the top poster.
