I have just checked, and my idea's work at 640X480.

I am not talking about making the screens smaller, just changing the configuration.

[ ] = one screen
| = cockpit overlay

|[ ]|[ ]|[ ]| = current view

[ ][ ][ ][ ] = proposed view

This might be a crude representation, but it works.

If you remove the cockpit overlay, there is enough room for another screen. This screen can display data at the same resolution as the present screens.

If screens were to be added (top left/right), they could be the same size as the ones at the bottom.

The main HUD/targeting reticule is where most time is spent looking and where the action happens, so this is the area that needs to be kept clear.

Hope this explains it better. I do not wish to take away from the game, just add to it.

"Chill", Steve. I'm not upset, just playing the devil's advocate. I, myself, prefer to use struts as it seems more realistic. There are several custom "HUDS" that other players have made for their own use and are available as a D/L to use.
The game provides for "mods" and you should be able to customize your HUD anyway you want to meet your own preferences.
Have fun...

Hello,

I took no offence at your comment, it was valid and I should not assume everyone has the same capabilities that I do. This machine was build for gamming last year, so it is quite upto date, but I have 3 other machines that are not as powerful.

I have never really been one for modding games, too far above my pay grade. I also have to be carefull, I am a staff member at a couple of anti cheat sites for a couple of other games, AA, BF2, BF2142 and CoD4. So I do play alot of FPS, but wanted something different. Elite was the first game ever to really get my attention, and this feels and looks like Elite's much bigger brother.

As for the feature requests, well they make sense to me. They can display information the game already has and/or information that will become available in the future.

Maybe an added request should be a configurable cockpit from the options menu. So, if you have modded your game you can keep an older style, or change styles to suit your personal choice.

Hello,

Having roamed around a bit, and used most functions now I have come up with another request.

Auto Pilot that uses the Jump Drives.

At the moment the Auto Pilot just aims at the Nav Point, but if point is out of jump range you have to fly it or do some smaller jumps. Why not get the Auto Pilot to use the Jump Drive if asked to by the player, and jump when energy permits and keep jumping until at the destination.

One point that's been brought up about a feature like that before (also related to multiple waypoints), is that the game would then play itself. I tend to avoid implementing features that just result in the game playing by itself as interactivity and player control is a big part of the design. Games that let you click a few times, then play by themselves defeat the idea of interactive gameplay, imo. However, I did make exceptions in this area and implemented both the autopilot and the auto-max-jump function. So you can essentially achieve most of what you're pointing out, just use the max jump option to automatically travel the maximum distance your jump drive is capable of. All you then have to do with this system, as the pilot in control of the ship, is simply control the jump drive and trim your heading as desired to reach the distant location you want.

Hello,

The auto-max-jump function now I have found it is perfect in connection with the auto pilot.

Now studying the options menu for anything else I missed.
