I don't think I've ever ignored anything which was slowly dying. When I suspect my HD is about to call it quits, then I back it up. But I play the game on two computers (one is out in the garage, so I only use it when the weather is warm) ... and, anyway, starting with a new profile gets to be easier after a few hundred game hours.
