Real sorry to learn of your sour grapes, Vinny. Allow me to assure you that Vice (this games' developer) is in full possession of his senses where his artwork and creation is concerned, specifically. Let me give you some history you may not be aware of. In Legends (precursor to Mercs), of the three Conflict and War Zones, Talison was by far the "easiest" hostile area in which to fight against the Vonari. One could not spawn-in then as a Combat Pilot, but as a "generic" pilot, and had to work to bring along one's own hard-won equipment and weapons, then find a convenient carrier to trade up to a mil frame, hopefully having enough of a credit balance to do so. Then, the mil frames had solely 5 equipment hard-points, regardless of frame, Ferret to Predator. The Ferrett and Aries frames had just two missile hard-points, and it wasn't until the Evoch-C frame that one got all 8 missile slots. "We" didn't have the other "Federation/Alliance" frames between Ferret and Chimera in Legends either. AI/NPC's only fired missiles at you, which was fairly simple to overcome with a few CM's and the immediate application of one's primary weapons suite (of whatever flavor).
With the advent of Mercs (1.XXX series), the Talison CZ, within the immediate 4 sector squares surrounding Command Alpha and the Eclipse carrier, was the "easiest" mission area I've ever seen Vice create. It became too easy. And "exploitable", per se, for those "new folk" and some of the "old hands" who took the time to "figure the angles". Earning military rank then became as easy and as simple as turning a book page. Fleet Admiral rank was easily attained by many, within a few days of purchasing the game and some diligence of effort. The question was then, "So, This is it?"
With the many iterations of the Evochron Universe that Vice has created,(Arvoch Conflict/Alliance, Renegades, Legends, and Mercenaries - in my experience) he has continually striven for fair and balanced game-play for all who purchase and fly the game(s). Fair for all - balanced for all, regardless of skills or the lack thereof. Now, with the launch of the Mercs 2.XXX series, the fairness and balance has been given a few, really basic tweaks. Better, more germaine/applicable "Newtonian Physics", that's more in line with accepted/current "science". All AI/NPC's shoot back with beam and particle cannon, as well as missiles. And the Talison CZ was "brought up to speed", reflecting some, if not all, of those changes. I've only listed a few of the many. By the same token, Vice has given "us" the means and the equipment to be moderately successful pilots, without regard to a particular spawn-in to start one's "career". Although, I must admit, spawning-in as a Combat Pilot has more advantages today than ever before. The cannon heatsink alone, is not available anywhere near Talison CZ and environs. And the StarGuard particle cannon is one of two with the highest cyclic rates available off-the-shelf (without creating your own in the weapns lab). Heck, even spawning-in as a Racer has certain advantages, if one keeps one's wits about them.

Getting "over the hump" of combat missions/scenarios really does take some practise/dedicated effort. The learning curve can be eased somewhat by joining in MP-space on any available game server offering. There is a veritable cornucopia of "veteran" pilots who are very generous of offering their assistance. It's taken me three years of some conscious/conscientous/concerted effort, bordering on the addictive/AROC side, to get where I am today. And, I am still learning and honeing my "skills". I get killed frequently by the Rebs, Guilders, and Von-doggies; a bit more "frequently" than I'd like. But now, its more like "OOPS! What did I do differently this time that got me flamed?" (Usually it's being neglectful of my "6" more than anything else). I really hate to see anyone "just give up", especially since they've spent their hard-earned ducats, and invested a bit of their time and themselves into the game. If you just keep at it, never mind the war zone combats for now, you can "get there from here, and back again". Read The Furnished Materials (SeeJays' Web-site(s)/DaveK's dual magnum opus - the Mercs Tech Manual and the Hints/Tips Guide). Peruse the U-tubes that have been posted for "educational purposes". Learn skills and techniques from those who're more than just willing to give instruction. The [LL] Clan and others, have established a PvP arena in the North of Saphire system. Don't recall off-hand which of the server platforms they frequent the most, but find them and go there. Collectively, they will teach you and thereby give you the skills you do need to accomplish the military mission.

What ever you decide to do, I wish you the very best of luck! :)

I hope you get this Vincire, but understand, that combat does not work like most space shooters. It takes a different skill set and different approach. THIS is why I love it! So many games are not just easy, but so simple it bores me.

You want some adrenaline challenge? If you're willing to have a bit of patience, I'll tell you how to do much better in combat.

First, get a civ ship, and learn how to customize it. You need cargo bays, most of all, and a mining laser. Traded ships don't lose value, so you'll be rich briefly, until you buy back you mil ship later. You will not lose money on this trade. Civ ships can be bought from stations, mil ships from carriers.

Get a civ ship, then learn to make your own weapons. Any trade station can let you do this, you just need the right resources. You can get those by mining and processing what you mine at constructors, constructors are a different station type. You can find them online most anywhere, because players like filling systems with them. Then make your own weapons, and make sure they have maximum range. The biggest change for me was when my cannons range could reach farther than my enemies. Once you have a good set of cannons and beams, buy back a mil ship at a carrier and go to town! Don't bother with missiles, not yet, and learn to challenge your enemies one at a time. You'll find it very rewarding and very satisfying. its a different KIND of combat, and its much more enjoyable to me.

This isn't, and never will be, a 'call of duty' shooter where you fight fast, use quick reflexes, kill fast, and die fast, then spawn again, again, ad ifninitum. It requires strategy and tactics as much as skill. After a while, it'll be easy and you'll find yourself bellowing "BRING ME A CHALLENGE!"

Shame you have no interest in the online part. It's not a uber-pwnfest, nobody will blow you away for no reason, and most people will love to help you. They can trade you for money and equipment, and anything you do online with your ship, gear, and money will be saved offline. Only things not saved are anything you build, but don't worry about that now.
Use the force? I\'ll give you force!

My only gripe about combat is somehow the beams hitting your shields somehow also drain your energy as well. So when some jerkoff hits you with a beam, your shaking everywhere and cant even see his ship, and cant return fire because you have no energy. Then when missiles start popping up everywhere you dont have the energy to shoot them down.

Get a bigger ship. They don't bounce around as much. I used to fly an Avenger but had to upgrade when the AI got ahold of better weapons.

Sorry you've decided this is the wrong game for you. You obviously love the combat side of things. Some games are combat arcade games making them effectively aircraft dogfights in space - EM uses real flight physics with inertial flight - and yes the initial curve is hard. However try doing the IMG Quest. You get to learn how to fly your ship - for example the race (though a lot of people complain about that as well :D ) teaches you how to fly your ship with fine control. You are get rewards at various points that boost your credit rating and make buying your next ship and fitting it out for a combat role (lots of extras to boost shields and weapons) possible sooner.

The MP aspect in EM is unusual in that the servers are run by generous players and are totally free. The community is very friendly and helpful. Learning combat in a pack with more experienced players is very helpful - people watch your six and you can live long enough to learn. I made the big mistake of thinking I had to be good to join in, - I should have joined in sooner to get good! :) You can also fly as a turret gunner and see how various tactics work in a (relatively) safe environment! :)

I've been playing a couple of years now and am still a poor combat jock, though I can survive . . . most of the time . . .whilst I do the other things that I find fun in the game - and there are lots and lots of them!

Vice (who is a one man developer) has, by popular demand from the combat junkies, created a Evochron based combat game Arvoch Alliance - just missions through a campaign, though I don't know how the difficulty level compares to EM - no doubt someone will be able to comment on that.

:)
