Procedure to buy new ship...

I must be stupid, but I can't figure out how to sell my old ship to buy a new ship. I first sell off all my cargo and equipment, then I go into the shipyard and choose another frame. When I click "TRADE AND BUILD" I get bounced back out to the previous screen and I still have my old ship. Do I have to sell back the other ship components first and how would you do that? I only see two buttons on the page, exit and trade. Is there an explanation on how to do this somewhere?

did you click and DRAG the new frame to the build window?

You enter shipyard, choose your new frame and equipment (which shows changes on the right side of the screen with old stuff showing on the left) and when you are happy with what you have done you then click Trade and Build which the shipyard does automatically. You don't need to sell anything first.

But make sure you have enough money and your configuration isn't in the red.

Is the ship you are trying to trade up to available in the station you are at? As thetiebers said, no need to sell your equipment etc, they move over with the trade.
