Some Trading/Mining Questions From a Newb

My apologies if either of these has been answered elsewhere. I HAVE tried my best to scour for answers before starting a thread, but couldn't find any, so here goes ...

1. Are 5 cargo bays the max any ship can have? I'm still in my little ol' Talon and that seems to be all I can pack in to it, but was curious if larger ships can have more? Otherwise, I can see it becoming veeeery tedious to shuttle five stacks of 25 goods across the galaxy just to make a little money. Which brings me to my other question.

2. Any tips on where/how to make money at the beginning of the game? Since starting, I have done nothing but mine diamonds and platinum from the asteroid belt near Evochron Station. I took a little jaunt down to the nearby planet (Sapphire, I think it is?), but found mining down there to be far less profitable.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the great tips! I'm curious, is there a purely Diamond Mining Beam? If so, where would I find one? I've seen a Platinum Mining Beam mentioned elsewhere, but would rather stick to Diamond if possible! Maybe I'm too cautious, but I like sticking it out in Sapphire where I can mine to my heart's content without worrying about hostiles showing up. I tried the Rucker suggestion and got blown to smithereens when I stepped away from the screen for just a minute or two to grab some dinner. If I could find a diamond beam, even if the end product sells far less in Sapphire than in Rucker or other systems, I could make an appreciable income without worrying about hostiles!

I havent found anywhere that has them yet, but I am looking, although i don't mine atm, its always nice to know where these items are located.

There's plenty of places that sell mining specific beams. But, you'll have to travel outside of Saphire to find them. Incidently; why go for a diamond mining beam when you can get a platinum one? You'll get more dosh for plat than for diamonds!

If you feel you can't handle the hostiles, outside of Saphire, why not go into MP and see if an experienced pilot will give you a piggy back, as his/her gunner, to more profitable areas?
