I'm doing something wrong on the first I.M.G Combat mission.
I have my wessel fitted for combat. Cannon and beam in primary weapon slots. Missiles in 4 secondary slots. I go to protect the carrier and kill 2 hostile wessel enemies, then on the 3rd enemy I always get smoked and blown to bits.
I've done this mission 8 times and tried different things...all end up as failures. The enemy wessel shoots me and my ship rolls violently to left and right. It doesn't appear that I do this when I shoot them.
Are the IMG Combat Contracts geared for multiplayer or is it that this game has a extremely steep combat learning curve...you know...you either sink or swim concept?
Thanks.

Combat Mission Failure
The violent movement is a special type of cannon, as I read, the inertial(?) type.
From one rookie to another:
The combat is a tricky one here. It seems like a very hard and daunting task at first, there's no real introduction to it but a dip in the deep water right away.
There are a few tricks to it as I read around here, and experimented:
- don't use the IDS drive, you attract missiles with its heat signature. (booster does it too, but you can simply not use it while missiles are onto you)
- use the chaff when the missiles are near (you'll hear the proximity alarm) but only then! That will get them. Too early: no effect.
- don't jump into the middle of the combat, select a jump point a few clicks away (you'll have no energy to fight otherwise!)
- change direction using TAB (booster?) and always be at speed in combat. It's easy to make a mistake and come to a near-halt. Sure way to die. I usually try to keep up 500-1000 speed during combat.
- be mindful where all the enemies are - this is the hardest. But when they follow you, they can pick you out quick
Plus:
- mind your energy balance! (I used to hit [ a couple of times before battle) and your shields (few direct hits from the front and you should hit numpad 8 to restore it!)
- get a weapons specialist crew member. It'll help a lot.
- there's an upgrade to double the weapons energy capacity - can't recall the name, but buy it when you see it

Ah, I got all those things...just need to keep at it a guess.
Most space sim combat games ease a new pilot into combat by giving you one or two enemies at the most to start off with so you can get used to the controls and tactics. This game is like...."I know you are new to the game, combat, etc. so here ....go fight and kill these 4 enemies at the same time you n00b!!!". LOL
