Riding the bomb

Post by Aures »

I was trying to think of new things to try and I thought "I know, I haven't blown myself up with a fulcrum torpedo yet.". Once I had turned myself and anyone around me into space debris a few times I had the inspiration to pay homage to the bomb riding scene in Dr. Strangelove.

So I sped up to 2500, dropped a few fulcrums and rode with them until they blew up. Here is a picture of my final moments:

"I haven't blown myself up with a fulcrum torpedo yet."

Lucky you, I recently purchased my first one and seemed far more adept at destroying myself with it than the reds I intended.
Dangerous weapon.
Nice screen-shot.

Ahhh!, Dr. Strangelove one of my favorite films. I can almost see a cowboy riding in those torpedoes.

Certainly does.

In that vein I would like to introduce 2 new games with Fulcrum Torpedoes I have invented. I call them Fulcrum Death Jump and Fulcrum Chicken.

Fulcrum Death Jump:

The goal of Fulcrum Death Jump is to fire a Fulcrum Torpedo, jump and then get blown up by the explosion. Sounds simple but it actually requires pretty precise timing and navigation.

Fulcrum Chicken:

This one is for two or more players. Just like regular Chicken except the goal is to be the last to jump before the Fulcrum Torpedo goes off. First to jump loses unless the other guy gets blown up. If you both get blown up you both lose. For close calls it might be helpful to play with three people so the third can wait at designated jump coordinates and declare a winner. Only trick is you have to make sure you are in the blast zone for the explosion, going at normal IDS speeds in the direction of the torpedo is more than enough.

Fulcrum Chicken sounds great! Especially if there is voice commentary...

There is a manouvre which we used to call the fulcrum attack, it involves jumping into the heart of the fulcrum explosion at the moment it goes off, if you time it right you are in-jump at the time of the explosion, yet to surrounding pilots is appears as if you've flown straight through the explosion. variants of this can give a combat advantage to pilots who are rushing to clear the scene but have taken too much damage to jump.

Also notable is tha_rami's infamous flower of death manouver, just pray that you're either out of range or your jump drive is functional if you ever see it............

( yeah that right the FT can be really really deadly in MP, you just have to get deal just a little damage first ).

If you fly in a wing there are also a whole host of FT based attacks, but I've given away too many trade secrets as it is.

Nukes are weapons of peace, not of war. I think we are better off using them to place bets in friendly Fulcrum Chicken matches than to blow up someone who doesn't want to die.

That said, I do look forward to raining hellfire upon opponents in many interesting and varied ways.

Hmm, i'll have to try jumping into the heart of the explosion. I found it surprisingly easy to avoid the fulcrum blast by jumping. Initially the idea that became Fulcrum Death Jump involved timing the jump so you didn't die, but I found that too easy.

You only have a few seconds to initiate the jump after you launch. Plenty of time if you have full energy (time enough to launch a second and still jump), but if you have just emptied your cannons your toast even on +5 weapons. Does that suggest an obvious tactic to anyone *grin*?
