Looking to improve the presentation of the Target Range List MFD in the cockpit, I came up with this comparison between the current display and a mock-up of a proposed display.
Proposed:
Original:
Features of the proposed version include:
Increasing the "whitespace" between target names and range values, potentially increasing legibility.
Right-justified range values, providing a columnar view of numerical values.
Indentation of the target list ship names, helping the target selection brackets stand out, potentially aiding visibility.
It doesn't look like I can do what I want with a text.dat file edit, so I hope this is either considered for the release version, or the required formatting is made available as part of the upcoming mod kit.
I really, REALLY like this proposal. Clears that display up nicely. Think Vice should implement this in the release, it's too good to just be left as a mod.
Actually, my plan is to make it a standard part of the game. Quite a bit of code work involved for all of the formatting and space checking (from an already parsed set of character values, lol), but it should be worth it in the long run.
Thanks for planning on adding this in. It isn't a time-critical feature for me. It just happened to be easier to document changes than some other ideas floating around, so I posted about it while the thought was still fresh.
I obviously don't know how you implement the display as it stands today. If it is two columns/arrays of data (name, range, separated by a colon), I would have thought the difficult part was finding/writing the right-justification for the range data. If it all comes in as one long string before output, that would be more difficult I guess....
But please don't think this is a killer feature I must have sooner. I'm just happy if it gets on the TODO list.
I agree it's a very useful improvement. I use the target list most of the time for tracking who is jumping in around me so this makes it much easier to see at a glance.
Another thing i could really use is the "lock the guy in front of you" button when doing quick passes in enemy swarms: often the enemy you are targeting in a furball is not the closest enemy, and so you have to cycle a lot of reds before locking on the right one

Just put the ship you want in the gunsight, then press the Y key.
