Why do you love the Evochron Games?

Post by OneYoungE »

So, I've read the reviews and seen the list of features. I always suspect reviewers spend enough time with a game to get a review out but maybe not enough time to really understand it. So I'd like to understand why you personally love these games.

Any opinions are appreciated. Thank you!

It's a good game. It isn't repetitive. You don't have to do a certain mission to increase your potential. You have complete freedom to do what you want within the game. Unlike many games, once you've run through it, then, that's it, with the Evochron games there is no ending, or in-between, what you do is up to yourself - the game never gets boring, though there are boring aspects to it, such as mining, trading, though, again, there are those who love that aspect of it.

The developer, Vice, is always on hand to solve any problems. He also takes in any reasonable, and popular, requests, and can implement them within the game, in anything from a couple of hours, to a few days - such service is rare, in my experience.

MP is free - a big plus.

Pilot profiles are consecutive between MP and SP, aside from station building. You kills, cash, rankings, etc, transfer across both mediums with no fuss.

It has a very small HD footprint for the size of the game.

And, all this costs only $30 - you won't find better anywhere, imho!

For 3 principal reasons:

1) I think this game have create a New Tipology Game: SandBox Multiplayer

2) Procedural universe without istance

3) Perfect balance between simulation and game

...and a lot of other great ideas

Can't add much to the two previous posts.

I have been playing MP for some time, and its the first (and only) game I have done so. I have developed some good international relationship so far (I hope).

The interplay between the clans is fun although in fairness, it can get a bit flakey, but then thats competition. Somebody always calms it down and its all good hearted.

The support from Vice is, I believe, the best you will ever get. The cost is small compared to the enjoyment it provides. There is a story line if you wish to follow it , but it is not mandatory.

Can't add much more, just a fabulous game.

Enourmous space to explore. No loading in game for planetary descends, docking and so forth. I have never seen that before. A great forum where everybody helps out. All from rookies to the God, Vice, himself.

In one word. Incredible.

 All the above. Plus:
  • Ten or more players on an MP server without appreciable lag.
  • One great big universe without cut scenes or the need for jump gates.
  • Jump gates if you want to use 'em.
  • Planetfall ... also without cut scenes.
  • Support from Vice ... and a genuine willingness to make changes.
  • You name it.
Edit: The ability to mod just about anything.

I'm enjoying this input. As I've posted before I'm likely to buy this at some point in the near future. I'm the kind of person that has enjoyed "another sandboxed space sim made by a german company" for some of these same reasons.

I do however like a bit of story sometimes (for instance, I follow the missions in that "other game.") How did you like the story for Mercenary. Is it long enough to be engaging and open-timed enough that you could leave it alone for a month, do your own thing and come back?

None of this is a make/break discussion for me. I'm just curious what other people feel about it.

 The quest is more difficult than either the Legends or Renegades quest. If you leave it for any period of time, you might want to take a few notes. Granted, you can review the "last message" sent ... but that only means the very last message. Sometimes, needed information (to continue the quest) can only be found in messages received prior to that last message.

There's a quest in Mercenary, one that you can follow, if you want, or ignore - personally, i've never bothered wtih the quests in Evochron, but, that's me. Many others have done the quests and enjoyed them.

The story is a simple one. The Vonari, and alien species, have been beaten back from a segement of the universe, which is now controlled by humanity. The Vonari are still out there, and to be encountered, especiallyin the war zones, or, in Vonari space itself.

Human space isn't all the peaceful. There are various guilds, mercenaries, rebels, and navies, of different factions. You can tame a hostile system by doing missions for one section, or another, or, you can just battle the lot of them - your choice.

That's what Mercenary is all about, choice. You are not restricted to any particular mode. You can be anything you want; a trader, a fighter, an explorer, or all three. You can join a clan, start a clan, or be an independent, again, your choice.

I don't see what you're being so cautious about, it's only US $30. As for leaving it for a couple of months, and coming back, sure, you can do that - but, if you start it, especially in MP, you won't want to leave it, not for a couple of weeks, never mind a couple of months.

Get yourself a good joystick and join in the fun.

The Evochron universe is so massive, with so many things both known and unknown, you'll never get board. I was playing the previous game Legends for almost 2 years and still discovering new stuff. Mercenary is, I suspect, even bigger than Legends. The multiplayer aspect brings more realism and dynamic play that adds another dimension to the game.

Just wanted to point out I'm not being cautious about purchasing because of the "features." It's more of a time/money debate with the time schedule/budget committee so I'm just enjoying getting people's opinions at this point.

I like multiplayer. I like the freedom and the variety of this universe. The many secrets, mysteries and whatever. Sometimes in MP you can see someone whose coordinates look "impossible" or out of the map. This atmosphereof mystery is very appealing ;)

But I think that the best feature is multiplayer. There you can learn, explore, fight, follow the questline, helped (or obstructed sometimes) by other players. A very exciting game. And you're gonna love the war zones ehehe

I would say the Evochron Series gives you the closest thing to real space flight. Before I played my first game of Renegades, I literally had to learn the mechanics of space and atmospheric flight. Most games out there spoil you, and make it way to easy. It was a fun learning experience for me. I didn't understand pitch ladders, IDS systems, and all the avionics you have to learn., but I like that. Also, all the encounters in space from planetary landings to black holes, to nebulas, plus all the hidden wonders out there. The Combat is insane, especially in Mercenary. I had a small taste, and in my opinion, Mercenary really takes you on wild ride. From the Pics I've seen in the forum, Multiplayer in Mercenary delivers an exciting combat and exploration experience with other pilots. When time permits, I'm definitely going to drop in. This is a Pilot's game for sure, and you're not alone, there are Pilots always ready to help you in any area you need.

Best feeling of spaceflight since the Independence Wars, best combat....ever. Great for those who own a HOTAS and TrackIR.

Space, the final frontier.

No, really. That's what it is. People hear that phrase a lot, but seldom think about what it means. It means freedom. It means escape. It means that there is a whole universe out there, waiting to be explored. Waiting breathlessly (because there's no air in space).

What I like about Evochron, besides the majestic beauty and mostly-realistic space-flight, is the freedom.

After that, there is the learning curve. Some people think learning is boring, but really: don't you feel good when you master a new skill? You need to learn how to survive in space, how to fight, how to mine. These are skills that, once mastered, give you a feeling of accomplishment, and I think that is key to enjoying a game. When you try really hard to figure something out, then you learn the secret and reap the rewards for your intellectual effort, you get a huge buzz from that. This happens when you figure out how to kill without dying, how to make good trade runs, how to quickly enter a planetary atmosphere without burning up, how to jump directly into an asteroid cave next to hidden treasure, how to find hidden planets...etc. It's not point-and-click play, it's a learning experience. So, when you think you have learned all there is to learn, you discover something new.

I love this game for many reasons. But there is one reason that I like most, freedom!
