I have a dell power edge server I got off ebay not doing much so I figured I would run a Evochron Merc server on it.
I run vmware esx server so I can have multiple os's running at the same time since not one of them uses up all the hardware.
But I loaded it in a xp vm and soon as I lauched the server it tells me it needs dx9. While vmware on the desktop supports dx9 virtual machines in a esx server dont.
Any reason why running a server needs dx9? I figured it was kinda strange for the server program needing it.
Any way to over ride it?
If not I guess I will have to wipe it all out and put XP on it or something but thats a bit of work.

I think that the server program itself uses directx.
I installed the redistribute and it ran just fine:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/d ... laylang=en
I would try installing and running the program just to see if it would work using esx.

The server requires DX9 because the game requires DX9 and the server actually uses the game engine thus has similar requirements to what the game itself does.

Thanks for the info TGS. Also Cyph vmware esx server doesn't allow its virtual machines to run any dx version. If I was running vmware work station with in windows or linux I could.
Ok, time to install windows on the server =(
Thanks for the info all

Ok so I loaded windows 2008 on my dell power edge server and did the dx install and all the updates.
Now it tells me display is not supported by available hardware at line 0.
So what I gather I have to run the server software on some machine thats able to run the game. Most true servers arent able to run the game. So from what I have seen "true server hardware" wont be able to run the server version for this game.
I'm not trying to insult anyone here but I think its kinda crazy to need a server that is about as powerful video wise to be able to run the game as the computer I actually play the game on.
Servers have always had very weak video cards.
Any way to bypass this?

Not sure bud. I can tell you that the Video on my server is embedded, but the board is only a couple years old and meets the minimum requirements (128 MB DirectX compatible).
From the FAQ: (http://www.starwraith.com/evochronmercenary/faq.htm#8)
I have a problem running the game and the suggestions here haven't fixed it. What can I do?
- If you haven't been able to find a solution to a particular problem, you can complete the following steps to forward your system specifications/details in an e-mail so further assistance may be possible.
- Click on Start, Run, then type in MSINFO32 and press enter.
- Then click on the File option at the top and click on Save.
- Save the NFO file, ZIP it to compress the size of the file, then attach it to an e-mail, send it to me and include a detailed description of the problem.

Well according to dell its a
Video type
ATI Rage XL PCI video controller; VGA connector
Video memory
8 MB
So no not by a long shot. But I think your missing my point. The server version of the game shouldn't need the same video system requirements to run a evovhron mercenary server as it does to play the game.
If that was the case it would be crazy expensive to have any game hosting done now days.
What Im saying is I shouldn't have to have a beefy video card in the "server" just to run a evo merc server, thats just messedup.

I am having the same issue, hopefully a console or command line version can be released or toggled?
I have an actual graphics card on the server as well as DirectX. The issue is with it requiring the GUI to run with hardware acceleration I believe.

I am not using my server until I can solve the video card issue:
