Universedata.txt file...

Post by SeeJay »

Hi!
I am trying this universe map program "The Hitchhikers guide to the Evochron Galaxy"
It requires a universedata.txt file to run. Where do I find this file? It's not in my game-folder?!?!?!

I looked around the forum but couldn't find any help with this issue.

Thanks in advance!

By default, it's in the c:\\sw3dg\\EvochronLegends folder.

If I recall correctly, that program was written for Renegades, and crashes quite frequently with the Legends universedata.txt. Too bad, actually, it was rather useful.

 I used it a lot when mapping out a modded uninverse in Legends. It only crashed when I zoomed in more than five or six times ... don't remember exactly at what level. Otherwise, it worked just fine.

I never had problems using it. I just tried it for fun twice only though, so I'm no expert in this case....LOL..:P:P:P:P:P

Thanks everyone. I'll take a look at it after work tonight. It seems like this Fenix software is freeware, so I might take a look at that as well.

Thanks Vice, I found the file. (I'm so stupid, please don't tell anyone). The program worked fine for EL.
Might try it with EM when it arrives.

Great...so how do we mod the universe, then?

That is great news! and probably the way it should always have been. Would be cool if a planet or system was added every few updates just to keep us on our toes and constantly discoverin new content....

On the other hand, it makes finding certain things (like the handful of "hidden" solar systems that were placed somewhere in the great void) ridiculously hard; which is rather bad, since likely no one will find them "by accident".

There's also the issue with the equipment found almost exclusively on the "normal" hidden planets (stealth generators, high-end guns). Someone new to the game has the chance of a snowball in hell to find those - he knows from the website that the stuff exists, but can't get it anywhere.
He has no way of knowing about the hidden planets (besides the system descriptions, granted), or that they are located around 90(!) sectors outside of the main system.

For the math inclined folks, that's an area of ~25500 Sectors one needs to investigate and map, with a class 5 drive or below; this borders on a guide dang it!-situation

In that case, I have a feature suggestion - rumors. Something equivalent to a drunken spacer rambling in a bar about that lost system he found while going from Cygnus to Lambda "the hard way". Maybe some seedy offerings of dodgy star maps for inflated prices.

After all, what good is a secret area in a game if no one ever finds it?

LOL....Definition of Hell is relatively a state of being. So you could be freezing in Hell for an eternity. In which case there would be plenty of snowballs for you to find....:P:P:P:P:P

I know quite a few colourful expletives to adequately describe the futility of the situation, but I'm supposed to keep this family friendly, so bear with me, okay?

 Eclipse is correct about the need to do the quest. As with other Evochron games, I'm pretty sure you either do the quest ... or beg others to reveal information you could've gotten, on your own, had you spent less time fighting and more time questing. (Btw, the quadrant map is approximately 10,000 sectors on a side. That's a total area of 10,000 ^3. Not including Vonari space and Andromeda.)

 Sorry, Eclipse. 10,000 on a side. (I have almost that many prototype modded quadrant maps to prove it.) From the center, the map extends approximately 5,000 sectors to the edge. For a total of 10,000 sectors per side.

:o I don't know how you get to the sixth power instead of cubed but, yup, the default universe is certainly bigger than what can be displayed on the quadrant map. Nonetheless, when you increase the size a lot, strange things start to happen. I'll be checking Mercenary to see if some of them still crop up.

5,000^6 is still a LOT more then 10,000^3.
10000^3=1000000000000
5000^6=15625000000000000000000

MP servers are generally reported to be in sector 9999,9999,9999; that shows a game grid of 10000 in all six directions. I realize that Vice has only used 4000^6 as the setting for Evochron's main systems, but a modder can certainly use 10,000^6 with no trouble. If you add in Andromeda's space the possibility climbs to 30,000^6 quite easily.

The game's engine could conceivably support vast play areas and still have several tons of "fringe" space between.
10,000 in all six directions = 20,000^3 and 4,000 in all six directions up, down, left, right, front and back is 8,000^3 which is still a lot different then 10,000^6 and 4,000^6. You can not multiply the power by 2 in this scenario. Space dimentions are callculated in cubes and is always to the 3rd power or the product of the lenght of the 3 bases. You can not multiply the power of 3 by 2 because your using half of the base if all 3 bases are the same length...;):P:P:P:P:P

20,000^3=8,000,000,000,000 and 8,000^3=512,000,000,000
