Playing Evochron Legends using mouse and keyboard?

Post by Elsior »

Hi everyone,

I'm interested in getting Evochron Legends but I will be playing on a laptop using mouse and keyboard only (no dedicated Numpad, joystick, or TrackIR). I think I tried that before with Independence War 2 and it was just too hard. Would that take away too much enjoyment from this game?

I can easily say that, mouse and keyboard support is very well in Evochron Legends, I still sometime play in office with mouse+keyboard, works good.

Realistic zero gravity inertia based 'Newtonian' style flight model makes mouse and keyboard very efficient, mark my word and buy it.

I can help you setting your mouse buttons and help you adjust your keyboard and mouse very well If you need help...

My suggestion is, be careful for your laptop's specs, If they are ok with the game, don't think about the rest!

Welcome to Evochron!

Thanks, warsign and Oasis.

The specs are fine. It's not a gaming laptop but it got Radeon HD3650 and could run many new games at medium setting.

warsign, when you mentioned about setting up mouse and keyboard, does that refer to in-game setting? Would it be as easy as Freelancer?

Yes, easy as Freelancer, I can suggest you some free software for mouse button adjusting If you don't any and suitable keyboard setting etc...

By the way, suggestion of Eclipse is pretty good. Try it before you buy...You can use your pilot profile after registering the game as well.

I used to PvP against Vice ( at the time the undisputed master, though i've no record of him against E it would be a battle of the lifetime to watch) and often gave myself a good account even though he was on a saitek and I was on keyboard and mouse.

Hello Elsior, I play on my laptop all the time find I can do almost as well with just mouse and keyboard as I could with my X52 which just means I was never that good with it anyway (lol). Welcome to the forum and the Sim. Have fun and hope to see you out there sometime.:)

If you prefer the Freelancer type of mouse control, use the 'Mouse Point' flight control mode in the options menu. That lets you control your ship with a pointer on the screen to gauge your input. Optionally, you can also use one of two 'Direction' modes that use mouse movement for input.

Hi Elsior, Welcome to the game and forum. If you used to keyboard and mouse only as I was then you will enjoy the game more then freelancer. I used to play freelancer as well. Once you get used to playing with a good programable joystick and Track IR you would not want to go back playing without.....;)

Hi peeps, thanks for all the useful advises. Based on my short exposure in the forum, I could already tell it is filled by helpful and mature people. :)

I won't be able to download the game until Thursday, but I'm looking forward to it!

If I ever wanted to get a budget joystick that would still do the job, what do you recommend? Saitek X52 seems to be out of my price range. How does MS Sidewinder compare to it? And is it still produced? I googled "MS Sidewinder" and found pictures of MS keyboard and mouse instead.

On a side note, I just got assaulted, lol. May go to the police station tonight.

That's one helluva sign off Elsior! Not that any of us are voyeuristic, but we do share a reasonable amount of curiosity.
We can only imagine how you could be sitting at your computer typing an innocuous message and that would get you "assaulted"!

It happened when I was trying to catch a tram after I finished work and as I typed that message at home, I still had the incident in mind. Just a bunch of teens with a scissor. But I was wearing a suit (my only one, can't afford to get it damaged) and carrying two heavy bags of groceries so I had to hold back.

Eclipse, I apologise if this is asking too much from a budget joystick, but does Logitech 3D Pro have force feedback? Also, I checked Logitech website and there were reports of non-functioning twist axis. Has this happened to you or anyone you know using this joystick?

I've had some considerable experience with just about every controller out there. I would like to share some of my observations.
Force feedback is cool and most have some sort of adjustment for shaking. Imho, it is very difficult to hold the pip on the target while the stick is shaking. If it works for you, fine
I believe that Saitek X series controllers are the most powerful, programmable controllers available. However, I do not like the "twist" action for yaw/roll, but that's just me.
I believe the Saitek X45 is the better controller and has even more options than the newer X52.
Since it is an older controller, many good buys can be found on Ebay
I have 3 of them, all working like new.
A good used X45 shouldn't cost more than $35.00 USD
All controllers are as good as the owner thinks they are, but you would be hard pressed to do better than an X45
This post is totally subjective and reflects my opinion based on years of gaming.
Good Luck

Difficult to find Microsoft Sidewinder F2 but I used to it, was good one. Few extra buttons but rest of it so fine.

I am still using Log 3d joytsick w/o ff in my home, really works well...

Bummer. I live in Australia and no Saitek X45 found on ebay.com.au. Did find Logitech Extreme 3D Pro and Attack 3 so I'll have a look at them.

Eclipse, the complaints were made by people reviewing Extreme 3D Pro on Logitech website. I'm just worried they may produce some bad batches.

Since I only have experience with my first and only joystick ever a X52, I can not give you much advice other than what I already stated, that I would not fly without it...Yes I know it is out of your budget...;)

I use the Extreme Logitec 3D Pro, and, I get force feedback from it. I think that it's a great stick. Sure, it doesn't have as many reprogrammable buttons as the X52, but, it has more than enough buttons for me.

I've never had any problems with the beast... I'd recommend it.

 Mine is an old Saitek Rumble Force and it still works just fine ... with the exception of the trigger tip having snapped off while in heated battle against Vonari. The twist axis has never given me any problems and I used the EL in-game profile so that it acts as a rudder ... allowing me to bank via the Y axis. Force feedback didn't work until I dropped Vice's little "FF" program into my game folder ... now it works great (no feedback when trying to line up a shot ... unless you're doing contracts on the surface of a planet).

I came close to buying one of those, but it wouldn't fit in my chair.
Besides, what would I do with my 3 X45's?

Maybe it is your surround sound volume setting that gives you the illusion you get force feedback while your whole house is shaking from the sound...LOL...:P:P:P:P:P
