Has anyone tried out TrackIR? If so how well does it work? I have a 28 inch monitor that does 1920x1200 and would like to see how well the Track IR works on that. Has anyone tried making their own TrackIR device? If not check out this video. You can download the drivers and stuff u need online. its simple to setup, just make your own set of glasses and BAM you good to go.

I've had TrackIr for about 6 years. I simply will not play a flight or race sim that does not support it. Once you get it set up properly and get used to the minimal motion needed, it becomes as natural as looking around in real life. The added immersion is incredible!

BTW- I'm not sure how well a home-made setup would work, but TrackIr with 6DOF or "Vector" tracking along with their software to adjust all the motion variables is impeccable.

I built an IR tracking unit following instructions from the FreeTrack website, parts from Radio Shack and a MS Lifecam VX-3000. The Wii remote thing wouldn't work as an IR camera because of my bluetooth adapter. Also I didn't use my Wii sensor bar (essentially an IR LED array) because the power source tethers you to your Wii. I could have bought a wireless one from Wally World, but it was more fun and cheaper to build my own.

If you have any soldering skills Freetrack is a fun little project and works really well. The system has the same six degrees of freedom as TrackIR. It needs a lot of tweaking during the setup phase, tho, both in Freetrack and the camera software apps. You'll also need some basic electronics knowledge.

*Note* Freetrack used to work wirh the TrackIR2 hardware, but due to some patent issues, compatibility was removed. I think they are working on a solution.

By the way, I play on a Samsung 37" widescreen LCDTV at 1360x768.

I didn't follow Johnny Lee's path as I wasn't looking for true 3D emulation (the video link in Mentat's post) but man, he's got some SICK skillz and very cool toys. If you're any kind of geek, it's worth checking out his vids.

TrackIR2 or Freetrack should work very well on your screen, Mentat. It adds a whole new level to any flight sim.
If you\'re feeling good, don\'t worry...you\'ll get over it.

I built a freetrack system too; never did any electronic work in my life before. It's a piece of cake, cost about $40 for parts and tools, and I get to keep the tools!

I would like to see some pics of your Cyclic setup. sounds interesting.

I'm currently working on a custom controller set, which I think is what BraveHart was referring to, but it's expensive and will take a long time to complete due to the cost (the cyclic stick alone is already at $300 for just the grip and switches, yes it is flight certified hardware; not including the base, stick or controller interface). I should have the set finished by the end of next summer.

I built a freetrack clip recently using just normal LEDs, must say i'm suprised how well it works. Just using a normal webcam at the moment but have ir LEDs on the way so I can build a system to work with the Wii remote. I'd recommend anyone who hasn't tried it or hasn't got trackir to try it, the results are really good.

I am at some point (when I can afford to) going to get Trackir though for convienience as well as use with some other non-freetrack supported games.

Ditto for me. I've been using my TrackIR 3 Vector for at least that long and won't play a flight sim or racing sim without it. In flight sims it really shines as it works extremely well to let you look around just the way a real pilot would. If mine breaks I won't hesitate to get a new one.

I have trackir 5 and it's quite good. I use it for EL and for ArmA2 mainly. Took some getting used to for me as I normally just snap look with my hat switch, but I'd say it's well worth it. Any TrackIR. Also, they're an oregon based company and I live in oregon. Their support is pretty good too.

Got my ir led clip built now. Using it in conjuction with a wii remote and it's excellent. Much smoother and uses less than 2% CPU. Will post some pics when I get a chance.
