Where can I find information on factions ?

Ok, I've just been told by IMG to go independant for a while to build up resources and getter better ship and equipment before next mission in Cerulean.
Before I go taking missions, I'd like to look at the various factions to see who I like/don't like.
I can't find faction details through search - is there a list hidden away somewhere ?

Basically, there are 5 factions plus the Vonari. 7 if you count the Unknowns. On one side are the Energy-Miner-Navy blocs. The Rebels and Guild comprise what amounts to the "opposing" interests. The Vonari - well, they're Vonari. The Energy-Miner-Navy grouping is mutually beneficial, in that there are contracts/missions that impact their status equally/collectively and individually. The Legends Strategy Guide has several pages (pgs 20-21) and graph-ics that explain the inter-relationship, and how it's tied to your own (versus global) faction reputation. I don't recall if DaveK included faction and/or reputation discussions in either of the Mercs Manual or the Hints & Tips Guide. You might check. Performing contracts/missions for each will raise your rep for that faction primarily. There are other considerations regarding SP and MP environments, that also impacts faction reputation. And yes, one can be a "successful" Guild-runner or Rebel-rouser. Granted, it entails a touch more effort, and the game "rewards", per se, are more heavily balanced on the Law-and-Order side of the fence, but it can be done.

Would that be the case in real life? Working both sides of the fence? I think you'd end up getting both sides mad at you ... EM isn't much different.

Depends relatively on what kind of work you do on both side of the fence. Hey if my neighbour mows my lawn and my neighbour's lawn I think we all be green!.....:P

I am 55 – too darn old
I play 6 to 12 hours a day – on way to much (retired)
I been on 10 days have massed 1.25B credits – too greedy
I have built up to the best civilian ship (Starmaster) – more greed
I have a Phantom, Fusion and Excalibur’s – I am dangerous
I want to start building stations – moving in on others lands

I still remember the keyboard commands for Privateer – stubborn
AND (drum roll) I never shut up in chat.....

KB, while you pilots in your 50's may not be the majority here in EM, you certainly aren't the minority either. And the clans that aren't founded by old farts usually have a crotchety AAPR member or two in their ranks.
