Gas Giant

Post by tjohnman »

Today I was flying around, looking at the NavMap for interesting things to do, and I spotted a gas giant. One of the things on my to-do list since day one is to "explore" one of those beasts. So I headed in.

Just seconds after entering its outer atmosphere, the Beast started to pull me in at ever-increasing speeds. And at that moment, staring at my puny 19-inch monitor I felt a vertigo I hadn't felt since I was a kid afraid to get into the swimming pool. My stomach actually felt like it shrunk.

Knowing that a monstruous mass of gas, hundreds of times bigger than the earth was about to swallow me whole and crush me inside its raging depths... Wow. I didn't expect a videogame to make me feel like that!

Of course I punched the afterburner and got out of there as fast as I could, so mission failed.

Things like that, in my opinion, make a great game. Thank you Vice!

PS: I haven't plunged in deep (yet), so I don't know how it is, but here's an idea: making ambient light levels decrease the further down you go would make for a perfect horrible death experience!

LOL, yeah, Gas Giants can be a dangerous place.

I build a trade station inside one once. I was drifting towards the center faster and faster during the count down
for building LOL!

The station was gone the next session so I thought someone destroyed it. Rebuild it and the same thing happened again.

Did the station get sucked in and blew up?:o
Haven't found any other answer than that so far, but I can't verify it since I didn't see it blow up!:D

Maybe it was your station! During one session on server Starport 6, I look at the navmap from the rear view and thought the station was in the outside not inside the gas giant. I didn't see my mistake though until I pressed F2. The fun thing is even if your landing is successfull, after a few seconds because of the strong gravitation field, your ship can't help being swallowed by the beast. :D

There's a hard-wired station in/on the gas giant in Capella, that's fun to attempt dockings with a few times. After that, it becomes drudge-chore weary. The rewards for trades are consistant with the local economy level. The indigens are problematic however. ;)

That was one risky mission you attempted to achieve. At least you survived

I like the sound of that. You should add it to the "Things I'd like to see in future updates" thread :)
