Just got the game on Steam Sale

Post by narbss »

Wow. I'm so impressed by what the developers of this game have created. I don't remember the last time in the passed 20 years of gaming I saw something this immense. I dare say for the first time ever I am overwhelmed with all the stuff this game has to offer.

I finished the "training" offered at the starting menu and was blown away when I was required to fly to the nearby planet and land. Is the whole game seemless like this? How many solar systems are there?

I really really really want to get into this game but I'm completely lost. I spent an hour trying to navigate the map and find my contract (someone at the station told me to go to a random place on the map to do a visual inspection of something) and I couldn't find it. When I set a waypoint on the nav map and tried to jump there, sometimes it throw me into a planet.

Like I said, this game is just amazing. I can see myself playing for years but it's just so overwhelming. I can't even get the save feature to work correct... I tried to save after my hour of playtime and when I crashed into the planet my previous save is at the start of the game. I deleted the profile all together and started a new mercenary but everytime I try to use the "jump" feature it automatically throws me into a planet despite the fact that the previous mercenary profile was deleted to get around this problem.

Some things will require some practice and learning, particularly navigation. Have you watched the tutorial videos or read through the navigation section in the instructions? That should help with those issues. If not, just reply here and I or others will be happy to help.

Your old profile is still there if you deleted it in the game. Look for the pilotX.bak file in the save data folder (default c:\\sw3dg\\EvochronMercenary), attach it to an e-mail, and send it to me (to the address at starwraith.com > contact). I'll review it to see what may have happened. It's likely easily recoverable.

Edit: Oh, yes, the game's universe is seemless in that way. There are several dozen charted solar systems along with many uncharted systems.

Evochron Mercenary does have a fairly steep learning curve. But eventually, (2 hours of playing for me), the light will go on. You still won't know everything, but you'll have a handle on it.

But until that happens, you're probably going to be lost. Jump into Multi-Player. People there are usually very helpful.

Good luck with the game. It really is seamless and it is VAST!!!!!!!!

I took your advice Vice, I spent the last couple of hours watching all of the resources you guys have available as well as reading some of the stickies on this forum. I think I have a much better feel for the game but theirs still a lot to learn, and quite frankly that's part of the appeal.

You guys did a bang up job creating this evo-verse for us. I think I read someone went out 250,000 sectors in one direction without hitting a wall... Is their definitive "wall" at some point or is it endlessly generated somehow?

In any case, I think that file you mentioned needs to be deleted for me. I found two in my folder, pilot0.bak and pilot1.bak. Is it safe for me to delete these two files? Will the game just create a new one for me the next time I create a new pilot?

Because I have made and subsequently deleted several profiles so far while playing around trying to get a handle on things. One thing they all have in common though... Is they all share a nav point deep into space that is usually invisible until I hit the Launch button to enter faster then light travel. It has happened to me several times on my guys so far usually while I'm returning from a contract so it screws that up. I make sure to set the nav point with left mouse click on the "rear" and "top" view each time and can see the new nav point. Sometimes it sends me where I want to go, other times it sends me way off into the unintended nav point.

I'm sure you guys are real busy as is and I don't think my save file is important enough for you to try to recover for me. But if you want it for your own testing purposes I would be happy to send it to you. Otherwise is it safe for me to delete my pilot0 and pilot1.bak files so that the game can generate new ones for me next time I create a profile?

 Yes, you can delete the backup files ... 'though it isn't necessary. If you cursor down the list of pilot profiles, you'll notice that the number of slots are a lot more than can be shown at one time. Just remember which is which when you decide to load that "favorite" profile.

 And the Evoverse is endless ... seemless. In places where there are no jumpgates, you can fly direct. You can insert Destination coordinates into the corresponding windows on the Nav Map and then use autopilot to get you to those far-away locations.

:o But keep in mind that the Alt key has its own functions. When used in combination with the hyperjump key (default F2), it sends you (not to your Nav or Waypoint but) to the maximum distance your class jumpdrive can carry you ... in the direction you're facing.

Hey all, brand new here, i just got game on steam sale as well, good job going to steam otherwise i may have never heard of this or tried it :) I havent even completed the tutorial yet and i decided to come to the forums(which i never do) and try to find a place to tell the developers what an awesome job they did here. I can tell from the first 5 minutes of the tutorial that this is a game that someone put alot of thought, as well as heart and soul into. This is just what I've been looking for, so happy i found it im beside myself. I can't wait to fully immerse myself into this game and the multiplayer aspect, im just like the OP in that im totally lost, in space, and thats so frickin cool! Great price, great depth. i feel like i stole something to get this game for such a low price. Thanks again to the Dev 2, thumbs.

OMG thank you so much. I think you are right! What I do is hold alt and then move my mouse to the top of the UI to open up the nav window. I probably made the mistake of holding the alt button while clicking on the nav-map so it launched me there? I'm going to play some more today and see where it takes me.

Honestly spot on. Maybe it's because space is such a dear topic to most of us, that this game is so appealing. But I'm genuinely rushing home from work just to play it. And keep in mind, I just dumped 300 bucks on the steam sale and I have several summer blockbusters on pre-order. I don't know how I'm going to even play any of the other games when all my time is here.

Hi Narbss, once you get hooked on Evochron you'll be surprised at how easy it is to make time to play... one of the first things to go is your sleep. :D

Lol Agent Zirdik!

There are some advanced pilots who have mastered the secret techniques of being able to run contracts to maintain clan % whilst simultaneously allowing their body to sleep. :D
