MX-18 and Renegades

Hi All,

Been playing mercenary on my old Lenovo T500 with no problems. Decided it was time to move up so got an Alien MX-18. Installed fine, but Mercenary just comes back with an error message that windows can not run the program. Absolutely nothing happens. Screen goes dark like it;s trying to load and then throws you out back to the desktop.Seems like if anything, it should run even better. Hate not to be able to play it on this nice wide screen. Well, you can imagine my surprise when it didn't run. I'll try Legends later and let you know how that goes. But shucks, I was making some pretty good headway in Mercenary. Any help would be appreciated-the \\Afghans sure don't know anything about this stuff! Did all the normal stuff for compatibility etc but no dice. We only get Fridays off, so to unscrew my head, this is what I do, chase spaceships around the galaxy. Thanks!

Check to make sure the install went ok and try to reinstall if needed. Then make sure any security programs have the game install folder and save data folder listed as exceptions. Next, check the save data folder (default c:\\sw3dg\\EvochronMercenary) for a file named sw.cfg. If it is there, delete that file and relaunch the game.

Hey Vice,

Well, it's finally Friday over here and a day off. So far no bad gyts causing any problems. I did all of he suggestions, byt unfortunately, it's still a no go on the Legends. However, and this is interesting, I installed Mercenary and it runs just like a champ. The Legends will run on the old Lenovo T-500, but not the MX-18. Did all the usual stuff-disabled SLI, changed resolutions, safe mode install, but still nada. Maybe I'm going to have to shelf this one? Any more ideas? Thanks buddy!

For Legends, there is a custom build of the game designed to work with certain Alienware systems. You can give it a try by downloading this file:

Then extract the EXE and replace the original file with this one to try it out.

Hey Vice,

You never told me that you have people from Alpha Centauri working for you guys! The file worked perfect. Here's how it went. Re-installed the original download. Unzipped the file you sent and pasted that into the working directory, and just for grins, took out the original .cfg file out of the swrg directory. Crossed my fingers and wham, the program took off like greased lightning!! I was in between missions, so I haven't had a chance to really get that far into it yet, but as far as config goes, it's running at 1920 by whatever the resolution is, sli enabled, great sound, smooth controlling and great scenery and it is FAST. I've been all over the world doing weird things all my life (retired military) and don't impress easily, but I have to admit, I am here. I have never had this kind of response and help vis-a-vis IT issues from any other company or organization to this extent. Hats off brother and kudos to all! Hooah! As I get deeper into the game, I'll keep all posted on stability and if any other major issues show up. But my gut is telling me there probably won't be, and I usually go with that feeling. It's kept me out of trouble quite a few times. Thanks again and eventually be looking for Harpoon out there on the boards. In fact that's the next step, as the Afghans are pretty fundamental so about one third of any servers or web sites you try to go to are usually blocked. Hi All,

I had posted a query in running legends on a new MX-18, for which there was a solution, courtesy of Vice, Well, in browsing the main web site, I saw that all the ganes were "new" so bought and installed them. Legends and Mercenary run great, thanks to Vice's help, but I'm having the same old problem with Renegades. As before, it just won't load. Black screeen then the application shuts down. Did all the usual triuble shooting as before (what I did with Legends) but no dice, Is Renegade an older game, and is there a possible fix for it, like with legends? Thanks! Lost in Afghanistan-

Yes, it's an older game. Btw, while you're waiting for help, you can always do the Renegades quest while playing Legends.

IIRC, the Legends quest uses pop-up windows and the Renegades quest uses messages in Chat.

The development platform for that game is very old and results in an incompatibility with some newer Alienware systems (seems to be related to the values returned after the default device check). If you send me a msinfo report on that system ( http://www.starwraith.com/evochronmercenary/faq.htm#8 ignore the pilot profile step), I can review it for possible changes that might help it work. But Mercenary and Legends (with the Alienware update) shouldn't encounter the problem.
