Just a couple of questions regarding Caves as my experience is limited i have not come across this yet.
1) I am wondering if you fly past a rock cave that has a hidden hole or gate in it, if it is detected on your radar? Or do you have to actually be inside the cave...
2) I have seen the typical rock caves, like the ones in Sapphire, Pearl etc. Do they all have the same looking entrance? Or do hidden ones just have an alcove of sorts?
They all look the same form the outside - big blob with a rectangular slot to enter/exit
There is a generic map available (in the Hints & Tips Guide and separately from SeeJay's site's download page) but each cave has a different selection of "things" inside it, so you have to enter and explore to find out what and where
They all appear on your Nav Screen as a single potatoe shaped blob with a little rectangle in it!
It is possible to jump directly into a cave, but since Vice tightened up on their "fly through" walls, it's not as easy (but not too hard )

Yes, that is what I mean mate and I understand not many people may have come across this to be able to reply. Say I found that hidden cave and it contains a gate/hole. Would I be able see it displayed on my radar from outside the cave I wonder?
The map I meant is a plan of the asteroid cave to help you find your way round! There are some bits that don't look like you can squeeze through but you can!
No you can't see anything that is inside the cave on your radar from outside afaik
