Possible problems with navigation.

Post by spiritgod »

I'm hoping I'm just doing something wrong, but every time I set a marker to a planet or station...basically anything on the map and engage my warp drive I end up with nothing around me. I look on the map and it says I'm where I need to be but I see nothing. Is this a bug or glitch, or am I doing something wrong?

Just in case here is my routine. Hit F1 to bring up navigation. Set a yellow marker for desired location. Hit F2 for jump drive, and that's pretty much it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome.

On the map:
- Right click to zoom in on the sector you want to jump to.
- Right click on a object (station, gate etc) to set jump point.
- Click on "Rear View" to make sure it isn't above or below you if the sector is empty.
- Set pitch /heading to zero.
- Jump.

When jumping to planets, make sure you right click to zoom in to the sector
and then LEFT click outside the atmosphere. Then jump.

Hope this helps a bit.

Okay, that seemed to work. I just thought it was weird. I'd be right on top of what the map said was a station or planet and nothing would be near me. Any idea what I was doing wrong?

same thing a lot of people have a hard time with, the up/down axis in 3d space using a 2d map.

Like SeeJay said you are ending up clicking on an empty sector on the SY axis and are ending up one empty sector above or below your target sector.
You can only see things that are near to you in the sector you are in!....;)

 There's a really, really good explanation for this little trick, with screenshots and everything. But, since I'm the one who posted it, it gets ignored. ;)

spiritgod, I suggest you take a look through this thread, pinned at the top of the Rookie forum:

http://www.starwraith.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8676

In it, you'll find, among other things, a link to Marvin's excellent explanation of the issue:

(I've linked you directly to it anyway for your convenience, although it is already included in the first link).

Thanks everyone. Yeah, I'm just so used to 2D mapping that it didn't dawn on me that even though I had a way point, that it could be off due to me not telling the game exactly where I wanted to go. I'm now right clicking on specific areas and it's working out perfectly. Thanks for all the responses and generally being a warm and friendly bunch...you'd be surprised, well maybe not too surprised, how awful most people can be on the Internets.

 That's one "tutorial" but I was thinking more along the lines of this one (also included in Viper's Table of Contents):

"Nothing is impossible, it only takes a bit longer!"

Hey SeeJay. How about this:

Everything is impossible. You have to create it. That's why it takes any time at all! Good Luck Pilot

Self-interest rules. Nothing is ever as it seems cuz no 2 people see the same thing the same way. Reality is illusion, and objectivity is void. Self-interest rules absolutely.
