In the begining use hit and run tactics, fly towards your enemies on inertia at a speed of 1200 to 1600, and take out one at a time till you get the hang of controlling your speed and when to use inertia!and after burners and ids!
the speed is important because of most missiles speed limit is between 700 and 1400 except for the excalibur but I have yet to see an AI use an Excalibur.....and know also the missile ranges and learn to shoot incoming missiles from your 12 o'clock to save on countermeasures....Also know your weapons range and you can stay pretty much out of hitting range while being able to hit the enemy flying backwards on inertia keeping your distance at 750 to 850 with the basic cannon and beam weapon you can take them out one by one while shooting down their missiles they are firing at you!.....;)

The AI now sort of hold back to "gang up" on you so you may have to fly towards them off to an angle so only one comes in within your guns distance limits as a time. Above all it takes practice, practice, practice. Don't be afraid or worried about getting killed as it happens to most of us at one time or other. :)

As an after thought, what does your question have to do with your posts topic namely "keyboards"? :o

I think he means using a Keyboard versus a Joystick or Controller to survive in combat....Some are better at using a Keyboard and some are better on using a Joystick.....;)

Sorry it was late and a little frustrated, I've also read Rubber Chickens' post and read the responses so I will try later. My biggest issue is back in the day when I used to play SW Tie Fighter I played on hard difficulty with thrustmaster FL16 stick and throttle with pedals and got quite proficient...so the keyboard screws me up with this type of game, its just "wrong" :( .

 If you have a joystick, there is very little need for the keyboard ... except when chatting.

Unfortunately, I don't. My thrustmaster controllers were the old DOS variety, no USB.

:o Mercenary gives you the option to map keys to your joystick. If you don't have a joystick ... well, (IMNSHO) that's what's wrong.

I am using a gaming mouse and a keyboard just fine. I have owned several fine Saitek controllers, but I like the kb/m butter. Results haven't been a problem.

To some it feels "wrong," but to me, since I have no idea what the control layout of a spaceship would be, I just assume my setup is fine.

In a historical flight sim a kb/m combo would drive me mad though.

 No joysticks aboard the Starship Enterprise. But then, again, it was a big ship.

If anyone remembers, the ships in Starship Troopers were all controlled with joysticks! :P

They were! And actually, I think I remember to have a seen a couple of scenes from Star Trek where the ship was steered manually. If I'm not mistaken, it was a scene from Star Trek Voyager in which Cmdr. Data took the ship into a planet's atmosphere and landed it there.

 Must've been his twin brother ... I don't think Data was ever assigned to Voyager.

ROFL! I think he has you there! :P
Both the X45 and the X52 have featured prominently in many movies. You just have to keep an eye out for them.

I used to play Star Quest Online, which was what Star Trek Online should have been like. No keyboards there.

Passed my first combat mission, I was up against three rebels, after taking out one of them the other two were more manageable. I still miss using a joystick and throttle with pedals though :(
