Andromeda's secrets

Post by _evil »

I've been searching around Andromeda for hours trying to find whatever secrets it's supposed to contain, and so far I've found nothing except for a few containers. Can anyone give me a few pointers on what to do/where to look? I don't mind if they're spoilers.

I've never been there, but maybe it's the containers. Use the tractor beam to get items from there (I don't know what's inside, though) :D

Andromeda's secrets

Hello _evil, welcome to the Forum and Sim.

Andromeda might have hidden secrets but I have only been there once, *spoiler* not much besides a black hole, asteroid belt, moon, star and the dome nebula texture. Keep looking like Rush said there might be hidden containers.

Andromeda's secrets

Post by DaveK »

. . . some say its secret is its beauty - but don't tell anyone or it will be filled with tourists and won't be worth visiting anymore! :P:P:P

The problem with hidden things is that people who find them in this game tend not to t blab and spoil it for others and people who haven't found them (yet) don't actually know whether they exist or not and some people don't even know that there are hidden things and so complain that there should be hidden things to make the game interesting; the latter tend to want hidden things that they are told about so that they can find them - a bit like having a crossword puzzle with the answers already filled in :P:P:P

And he makes an excellent point: it's really hard to look for something when you don't even know it exists...it's a catch-22.
Count me in the last category - folks who don't even know a lot of things exist...so of course you don't look for them, if you are not even aware they exist.

 If you do the main quest, you might suspect that the places it takes you and the things it reveals barely scratch the surface. If you then do the Quest for Peace, it should confirm those suspicions.

Agreed about the main (IMG) quest.
Guess I should really look into the Quest for Peace (in which I hope there's plenty of killing, btw! :P). If it does indeed as you say, that's really great, and I'll get on it as soon as possible!

 As for the Quest for Peace, killing is usually optional. But you'll find plenty of locations rife with optional targets.

To comment on the crossword puzzle analogy, it's like a crossword with a few thousand words where 80% of them are missing clues. It's somewhat overwhelming and it would be nice to have at least a few answers already filled in for you.

 The thing about crossword puzzles is that the clues aren't in the puzzles. They're printed below. In a box, by themselves. Which is somewhat like Mercenary clues ... you find them in the Quest. If you've done the Quest and didn't find any clues ... well, then I suppose you have a valid complaint.

North east is 45 degrees since 0 is north and 180 is the other way, south.

Andromeda's secrets

I've searched the field, the moon, and some unknown planet. I didn't find anything worth mentioning except a lot of combat practice. I know there has to be something but I just haven't found it yet. The planet is too big for me to say I've explored all of it and I'm not sure how fast it is rotating so exploring the light side of the planet alone may not be enough.

This area is ripe for some unique missions that somewhat lead you a bit more into finding the objects. I wouldn't have the quests say 'GO HERE!" so much as have you build up the area a bit. Build a station by the moon for a team that will be coming into the area. A refueling hub by the planet so that Navy search and rescue teams from the station can re-evaluate the planet without having to go back. Possibly have them deploy a research station just in range of an object that a science crew member can locate it and tell the player that you should bring your own research crew to the platform to discuss blah blah with the specialists on-board.

I really think I can pull it off to make it creative but still involve a decent time investment into exploration which in the end makes you feel like you've found it without being handed the answers.

Andromeda's secrets

Yep, what Cronic said. Andromeda, in the Mercs iteration, has been "turned off", from the main game/sim story-line. You can still get there, and it IS a nice place to visit - beautiful sceenery, antagonistic indigents. To my knowledge and experience, there remains just a few items of interest; namely the wreck, the crates, and the 4-lobed warp device. That these items are still extant from the Legends "cross-over", is a minor wonder. Just getting to Andromeda is a MAJOR test of one's flight and navigation skills. And should probably be retained for just that purpose. The Legends Strategy Guide alluded to some of this Andromeda info. DaveK's excellent work on the Mercs Manual and the Hints/Tips/Tricks compendium also mentions Andromeda - somewhat. And there lies the rub. The infernal balance between too much and not enough, and attempting to preserve (somewhat) the "surprise/discovery" factor of the game. Atlas shrugged.
