About to purchase, MP questions...

Post by xaronax »

Myself and 3 of my friends are thinking about buying the full version of Mercenary to play on LAN, and I have a couple of questions regarding the multiplayer aspects.

Are any game features/aspects/quests/whatever from single player not present in the multiplayer game? Will we be able to do everything as a group?

I have read a few other posts about server software not being currently available (due to bugs I assume). Is this required to host a MP game or can you connect ad-hoc?

Thanks for the help.

Hello and welcome xaronax.

Everything is the same in MP as in SP.
The only thing that doesn't carry over is if you build stuff (stations for example).
What you build in SP stays there and what you build in MP stays there.
However, all in your profile, ship, cash, equipment ... carries over between SP <-> MP.

You can do anything in a group, thats why MP is such a great aspect in this game.

The server question I must leave for someone else to answer.

Hope to see you all out there.;)

Also system standing, but who needs that?:D

As for the server program, I THINK you only need it if you plan to run a dedicated server, and not if you plan to just host a game every now and then. I could be wrong however, so I will let MM or Vice answer your question, because they know more than I do.

Hello xaronax, thought I saw you in MP already? I could be wrong. You can't hire a fleet of AI in MP as you can in SP. There may be other small differences. Welcome to the forum and hopefully the Sim. Maybe see you out there sometime.:)

Hello Xaronax,
Anyone can "host" a game with station building and teritorial gains kept with the host server and yes your friends can use LAN to join.
Other restrictions of SP vs MP also apply as point6ed out, such as fleet hiring.
I could be wrong, but whenever the host server closes all stations & territorial gains that were accomplished during the host game, will be lost.
Hope that helps... :)

 Another difference ... a small one. In SP, you race against AI but in MP you race against other players. Because of this difference, the only Quest contract you cannot do in MP (alone or with friends) is the race.

So I just found out. My friend and I have been playing together for about a week now and I've been hosting the games. Last night we had gotten enough money to build a couple of stations and this morning after I got up they were gone. I wish I had known that so we wouldn't have wasted the time and money building them.

I am sorry for your loss, but...
My post was on 1/18. Surely enough time for you to be warned.
I would like to recommend Remula One server. It runs 24/7, never closes and is FREE!
Tbh, it does close once in a great while for maintenance & updates, but we try to do that when it is very slow and only takes a few minuites.

 But, on MMaggio's R1 server, you don't lose your stations ... even after an update.

Yes, but I didn't read the forums until a couple of days ago, and that was just to post another thread. If I had read your post, it would have saved me a lot of headaches. :)

 Actually, as far as "lessons learned" go ... that one was relatively cheap.
