Technical Notes: New Mouse Input System...

Post by Vice »

Here are a few advanced details about the new mouse input system that will be included in the next test build, which I will hopefully have ready for download sometime this week:

If you've been running the game in a higher resolution, you will likely notice the mouse pointer will now respond with the full range of input control available by the resolution you select. Previously, the mouse input system used a 'scaled down' input matrix that often resulted in rapid pointer movement while also limiting of the range of movement for certain input devices. The new mouse input system now adapts to whatever screen resolution you are running the game in. So if you play the game at the optimized resolution used by your desktop, the mouse will respond with the same rate of control that you're already familiar with navigating your Windows desktop. Likewise, if you are using a pen input device, you can now use the entire screen (on some resolutions, the pointer will stay inside a margin on the left and right side of the screen) as needed for proper flight control and option selection. You can also further customize the horizontal mouse pointer offset if the pointing device you are using needs a different scale. To change the offset value, open the sw.cfg file from the game's save data folder and edit the line that reads 'MouseOffset=0'. Increasing the value from 0 to 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, etc will increase the scale offset. Values below 0 will decrease the scale offset.

The goal of this new mode is to provide a solution for players using pen input devices as well as reduce the rate of mouse pointer movement that a number of players have reported as being way too high.

Thank you so much for doing this I really appreciate it and am looking forward to giving it a go. I think my wife may even join the small crew I'm hoping to get into this game .. I played a few trailers so she could see the planets and she really liked the beauty of the Evo Engine so now the pointer thing works (fingers crossed) I'll no doubt be in space exploring sometime soon.

The pen will truly be mightier than the sword. Looking forward to testing the next release, it keeps getting better and better!

one thing I just thought of to add in here would be that when you are using the pens on a tablet pc .. even with the mouse sensitivity right down you still will struggle to get smooth movement as the smallest movements of the pen on screen are often read as fast paced/large mouse movements.

if the slider for mouse sensitivity could be increased to allow for more sensitivity if needed, that would be also very handy to have thank you.

There is a "low, medium, high" sensitivity setting in the Options screen after you choose a pilot.

I'm not able to accurately respond to the input comments as I was only able to play with an offset pointer but I do know that when i had the pen as input with the offsets happening.. i was only able to move a matter of 10mm round for a 180 degree turn which seemed over sensitive for the default setting (i'd assume that was on medium) the offset may of played with that a lot too but I'm just reporting as best I can from what happened when I was tyring to tuse the pen as the input device

I hope this does not affect how the joystick works.

Those systems are left the way they are, this is only for mouse input.
