Newbie tries to win a race

Okay, thanks to your help I finally won a race. I haven't got all the details figured out about the trouble I was having, however the race works if I wait a few minutes and then start. My opponent suddenly shows up and then we're off.

Now I'm working on finding a lost object for the Navy. I jump there and check out every blip on my radar but I can never find anything. I understand it should be white in color on the radar, but I never see anything. Any tips? Sorry to be a pest but it isn't like I'm not trying.

if you hire a science officer and get directions from him....

Pink is the color you are searcxhing for.
Blue is staitons. pink is gates and items. White is debree from ships.

After warping in, keep getting close to your jump target. A pink blip on your radar should appear when you get close enough.

Follow it and you'll find the container!

Engage inertial and jump (default F2 key ... but, after running into an asteroid or two, you'll probably want to reassign it to something else). Coast straight ahead until you see a pink or purple blip on radar (it can happen right away or take a few seconds). Then disengage inertial, turn on your tractor beam, and head toward the blip.

Thanks for all your help. I downloaded the container finder and hired a science officer. Took on another contract to find a container and went right to it. I was making it soooo hard. I was making the jump and then dodging all over the place to every blip on the radar. So much easier now.
