I'd love to check this prog out, but I'm not into the spoilers. Is there a way to clear out the database on my local installation and start fresh?

I'm sorry, but no. It logs on to my online DB by default.
In the first and second zoom it only shows the "known" systems thou.
You can use Atollskis NavData program. It's empty to start with and plots everything you find.
It's not a map, but I think you can make a map image easy in that program.

Yup. You can use Atollski's program to replace the current Quadrant map and it will plot your explorations while you're in the game. Start fresh, from scratch, or download SeeJay's database. Either way.

Atollski's program fits the bill nicely! And great site by the way, Seejay. I'm glad there were a couple extra files in the download section to explain the program a bit.

Hi XB7
Like you I didn't want to use spoilers so I edited SeeJay's database so that it only has the basic systems that are visible at the start of the game (though it does have all the planets etc). The datafile is available on SeeJay's site. That way you can treat it like a set of Michelin or OS maps and discover all the hidden systems yourself.
If that's still too much info I can edit it down even further (so you don't have to see any extra info you want to avoid) with just the star, gates and planets so that you can explore each system properly yourself. If any more is taken out you might as well start with a completely blank database!

I started with a empty database and am logging everything as I find it in each system.
NavData is great! I like the nesting style and the ability to apply notes. One thing I've noticed is that even in the same system, intermittently for what ever reason, known objects disappear upon the final zoom.
NavData has made setting waypoints a lot easier for me.

The nav map is 3-dimensional. If you're zoomed out, you not only see further along the currently viewed plane (usually Top View), you also see a zoomed out version of the other plane (usually Rear View ... or, up/down Y-Z axiis). Soooooo ... when you zoom in on your current view, you not only stop seeing what's further away along that view ... you also stop seeing what's usually further up and down (assuming you're in the Top View).
