[AA, EL] Variety of technical Questions

Post by LivewareCascade »

Greetings, I have a number of questions most of which are technically related:

1.) I see bindings for next ship/object/hostiles, but not previous ship/object/hostiles. Is there a way to bind these commands?

2.) My understanding for all controls marked "secondary control", is that these are standalone bindings for functions that are normally accessed using ALT + some other keystroke. Is this correct?

3.) Is it possible to turn the IDS switch to "HOLD" functionality, as opposed to "TOGGLE"?

4.) Is there any option to pause the game while conducting navigation or giving wingman orders?

5.) I own Arvoch Alliance and EL (through Steam). How much effort is it to migrate the bindings from one game to another? Joystick mapping can be quite long, and takes the better part of an hour, is there a quick way to migrate bindings from Arvoch to EL?

Thank you very much!

Hello and welcome. Here are some answers:

1 - Only the next/nearest options are available for non-visual target selection. However, I usually wouldn't recommend cycling through targets with next anyway either. It's generally best to use one of the nearest options (ship, hostile, object) and/or gunsight target selection. It's faster, more precise, and can be prioritized. If you're running mouse and keyboard, then just pointing and clicking on a target can be handy as well.

2 - Yes, that is generally the case. Where a single key option exists for those with limited keyboards, controllers, or who might prefer two things bound to one key, there is also usually a single key option to perform the secondary function.

3 - Yes, just press and hold the IDS key/button. You'll see 'Inertial Hold' appear on the gunsight while the IDS is suspended. Then release the key/button to re-engage the IDS.

4 - No, it's real time during most of the course of gameplay. So it's recommended to find a safer location or fly fast if you need to spend time evaluating navigation. You can also optionally map fleet orders to keys or buttons for faster access, rather than using the menu.

5 - There are some things that are interchangeable, but the games do have different controls and options, so some exist in one game that don't in the other. You can copy over these files which should work for axis inputs (these are located in the '\Documents\GameName' save data folders for each game):

- stickdevices-advanced.sw
- stickt-advanced.sw

If you're using the 'Limited' control mode, then the non '-advanced' files would apply. The 'keymap8.sw' file holds the key and button mappings, but this is where there are significant differences. So it's important to map the key and button controls specifically in each game. Once you've done that however and if you are using a controller for input, you can save your custom profile in each game to preserve and reload later. This is available with the 'Save Current Device Profile' option in the Axis Configuration menu (the buttons mappings will also be preserved).

Brilliant, very helpful. Thanks again!

Oh, last question (Not technically related, but I shall ask to avoid creating a new thread) - Extremely happy to support you by buying these excellent games, but can i buy the soundtrack anywhere?

Vice, my apologies for bumping this thread again - I can create another thread if you wish but hopefully this will be my last question about this - does the music you linked include all of the music from Arvoch Alliance SE as well? I think the Outer Rim album does, because I definitely recognize at least one song, but aside from purchasing all of them, I can't tell if all the Arvoch Alliance music is taken from the earlier Evochron albums.

I'm not sure as I don't recall which songs among his available albums may have been used between the two games. It appears that the totality of what Rich wanted to offer as albums/soundtracks is contained on those pages, so it's possible. You could check with him through his site to ask though.
