[EL] Some Hi-Res Alternate Asteroid Textures

EDIT: Fixed the filenames, sorry about that. New link.
Hey everyone,
I created some alternate textures for my own use and decided to share so that if anyone else wanted to use them they can.

These replace the rocky and icy asteroids. I am still on the lookout for a metallic replacement.

To use these, please unzip them to a folder called \\environment\\ in your game's installation folder, that's the folder with the .exe file.

You may need to create the \\environment folder if you have no other texture mods running.

To uninstall, just delete the files from the environment folder and the game will use the default textures again.

Thanks.

28 megs big so I can't attach them here.

@Adger, I think I turned that confirmation feature off. Try downloading again.

Here are some screenshots, updated. Tried a new metallic one but it didn't look right. I'll keep updating these and making them perfect.

Sorry anyone who tried to download and had to be accepted. I just got all the notices on my Nvidia shield instead of my cell phone. I think I fixed the permission, you should just be able to download it. I must've used the wrong link. Let me know if it's still acting dumb.

 It also helps to send your mods to SeeJay ... his website is open to all mercenaries (Federation and Alliance).

hey Bodega,

first thanks for the effort.

i tried your astroids.
it seems the shader files are misspelled.
i renamed them to aster1shader-high.dds and aster2shader-high.dds.

i made some comparision screenshots from the grey-ish astroids and i can't see any visual difference.

Edit: i think i compared the wrong astroids (the metalic).

oh, thanks Tes, I see that now. I'll reupload. Damn, good catch.

Sorry everyone, please redownload or rename the .dds files by putting the 1 and 2 before the 's'. I have the 1 and 2 in the wrong place, typo lol. Sorry about that. I'll reupload screenshots. I've also fixed the download file.

I'm also having trouble with the 'look' of the new asteroid textures...they look great in Evochron Mercenary. But the rendering engine is different? or something....

If you change the Cave assteroids:

astercave.dds = Base texture for asteroid cave
astercavenormal.dds = Normal map for asteroid cave
astercaveshader.dds = Specular map for asteroid cave

With your new textures it works just fine...you can see the new textures and shaders/normal maps.

Thanks, yeah, it's still a WIP. Just thought I'd share with people if they wanted them or if they want to edit them or go nuts. The default metallic ones look nice. I'll see about tweaking these and keep uploading them for people.

Thanks Matchbox, yeah after comparing the rocky ones, I'm not too happy with them, though the texture I used is really nice, I guess it just doesn't translate well. I'll keep messing with it and reupload it. I do like the way the Icy ones came out though.

hi bodega,

your mod inspired me to try to mod the astroid textures.

i made a gimp layout (rough uv-map) to create textures for astroids in EL.
it contains several layers to show seam collision areas and i added a example texture (diffuse, normalmap, specular) ready to export into dds-format.

here is an preview screenshot from the example texture within mining distance:

i contacted SeeJay and he uploaded the gimp layout + compiled example texture on his site under MODS->ENVIRONMENT.

direct link gimp layout:
http://evochron2.junholt.se/mods/tes_EL ... _72dpi.zip

direct link compiled rocky astroid texture:
http://evochron2.junholt.se/mods/tes_EL ... ressed.zip

i hope the gimp layout is usefull and we see more different detailed textures in the future.

Hi everybody : )

I'm a new pilote in Evochron Legacy ( really great game ! good work !) and I try to make new astroids textures too.

I tried several methods to make something seamless... but there always are some troubles.
thx for the gimp layout, it was really helpful : )
It's sounds like the color map doesn't really match with the normalmap and the seamless for the texture doesn't work very well on my tests when it's ingame.

Do you think there is any way to take the asteroX.x files somewhere ( if they exist ) , or to make our own asteroX.x models with our own UV map ?

Thx in advance for the answers : )

Have a look at the asteroid mods on SeeJay's site: http://www.evochron2.junholt.se/main/legacymods.htm :)

I will plan on introducing the ability to import a custom global asteroid mesh for the next update. That way, you'll be able to import a custom structure with custom UV mapping. If you would like advanced access to the test build when the time comes, simply send me an e-mail (starwraith.com > contact).

thx for your answer Davek : )

In fact i did, and I took the gimp layout, as I said in my previous message it was very helpful thx to TES ^^.

but without the 3d mesh it's still complicated to make something seamless.
in fact I used the Gimp layout of TES to try to quickly paint the textures/normalmap according to this, here is the 3d preview on several random shapes :
[sketchfab]3180105426d6412c879a99ce0142ae3a[/sketchfab]
EL_asteroid_test by Twinley on Sketchfab

It's not perfect because that's just a quick test ^^, but ingame I still have issues.

that's why I asked if there was any way to find the *.x files so I ( or anybody else ^^ ) can directly work/paint on the original 3d model, it should be easier to make textures more pushed with more details, i think.

ah Thanks a lot Vice : )
you answered when I wrote my other message ^^

I'll send you a message when you're ready for some tests if you need : )

Hi everyone : )

Here are some screenshot of asteroids test made with blender and gimp, and imported in game.
This is a work in progress, and it only works with a test build of the game shared by Vice ( thx you ), that doesn't work with the actual build of the game for now.

I'll try to make other tests later with a youtube video : )

Hi everyone : )

Here is a small video to show an exemple of customized asteroid in game.
Vice allowed me to test another test build of the game in order to try a glow texture with bigger resoltuion ( thank you again : ) )
here the glow texture is in 1024*1024, maybe 512*512 might be enough.

https://youtu.be/REbeDwG75rI

I'll share the *.x model and the textures later, for those who are interested.

oh by the way, the skybox textures have been made with SpaceEngine. there is an option to export all the images needed : ).

Hi all : )

as promised, here are the links to download the aster.X and the textures in 2048*2048 (1024 for the glow map )
aster.x
aster1_textures_pack
asterglow map

For now it doesn't work in game, but you can download those elements if you want to see an exemple.
And those textures only work with this aster.x file ( because of the UV )

For those who want to try to make their own texures, I can give one possible method in the broad outline for the creation ( but for the details, I think there are very good tutorials on youtube : ) )

I'm using Blender and gimp.

First I tried to find a simple shape in lowpoly matching with all kinds of asteroid.
then I sculpted a asteroid in big resolution.

Next, I unwrapped the UV of the lowpoly model, and baked (transfered )the volume of the sculpted model on the normal map texture of the lowpoly mesh.

After that, I painted the color of the asteroid on the lowpoly model.

I used gimp to save my png textures in *.dds format, and desaturate the color texture to play with the grey contrast for the aster1shader texture.
I also used the normal map plugin of gimp to modified the aster1normal texture. If not it doesn't work perfectly ingame. you need to reverse the Y value.

You can export your 3d model with blender in file/export/directX(.x) ( if it's not available, you have to activate this option in file/user preferences.. -> Addon -> Import-Export Direct X x format )

you can unselect the option " export materials " I think.

and that's it : )

I hope this will be useful.
Have fun

I'll see to make other textures later : )

thank you !

Glad to see you like it : )

I don't known the good limit for the polycount, maybe we can reduce it. But as it sounds like the game applies a soft distortion on each asteroid to not have exactly the same, I thought it was better to use that kind of mesh, so the distortion can be regular.
