In-Game Notepad - Would you use it?

Ican't get the GameNote to run on my system. (Win7 64b) and I have the
Microsoft.net Application Framework up to date.

I tried running it as admin but that didn't work. Any ideas?

What happens when you try to run it? Error message? Just won't start? I need some details to be able to troubleshoot it.

The hourglass just keeps spinning. No error, just an endless loop.

Check to make sure you have Version 4 or later of the Application Framework. That's the only thing I can think of that would be causing it. You have the application framework but not all needed elements are there because it relies on Version 4 and you have Version 3.5. or earlier.

I have the latest version, so it's not it. :(

This is very odd. Did you get the License Agreement box the first time you ran it? If not, then I hate to say it, but it looks as though something is wrong in your OS. I know, I know, but all that does is send a standard command to Windows telling it to display a message box with some text that's sent along with the command. If Windows can't follow the command then there has to be something damaged in the Windows operating system. It must receive a command back from the Windows operating system that the Yes button has been pressed. It will sit there until it receives an answer back from Windows or windows closes it.

I think I got that Agreement box yes. The first time I tried.

I'll keep testing and see if I can get it to work.

Doing some research it appears that I may have made a slight error in the coding. Nothing dramatic, but it checks the registry to see if a certain key is present and if not, it displays the License Agreement box. Then it goes on with the rest of the routine, which includes reading the registry. Normally this wouldn't matter, as there are default values if no value is found. But in some cases that might cause windows to freak out and not know what to do.

I have uploading an updated version that looks better and has no title bar. But you can still horizontally resize it and move the window. You just have to select Move/Resize from the Options menu and then Complete Resize when you're done. I've corrected the coding in the startup routine for this update. Below is the link for the update

Thanks Janus.

I'll give that a go tonight after work. If it works, do you want me to replace the current version or add this one to the site?

Just replace the old one. Unless you want to keep it archived for some reason. I have an archive of all my programs, so you can just replace it.

I replaced 1.0 with 1.1 - the license agreement didn't show but the program runs.

I can move it, the transparency works well. However neither 1.0 nor 1.1 resize horizontally, only vertically. The width is fixed at 39 characters. I can resize vertical to full screen height - is it supposed to resize both ways?

It looks like it could be a very useful little application to replace the scrap paper for jotting reminders etc.

Thank you! :)

Dang it! I knew there was something I was forgetting to do. I'll release a 1.11 to remove the horizontal size restriction. It'll probably be a day or 2 before I can get to it. I'd already had it written, in the form of the original when I uploaded it and that's the size I use. Forgot all about the horizontal size being hardcoded.

LOL. I'll wait with the update until you are pleased with your

Version 1.2 is out. It removes the width restriction, and adds shortcut keys to all menu items. Well, almost all. There's one you don't want to be hitting accidentally. It won't delete anything, just close the program and make you accept the license agreement again. You can find it at the link below.

http://www.mediafire.com/download/sca9v ... Note12.zip

I'll add it to my original post on the program as soon as I hit Post Reply here. SeeJay, feel free to replace the one on your site with this one.

Thanks Janus, replacing the old one now! My HUD is looking quite nice, navigator's assistant on one side, notepad on the other, cargo status displayed with shield numerical values and in-sector coords. Custom stock. Thanks again!

Funny thing, I was jut thinking about using the imported savedata to create an Android\\IOS app for Legacy which has could realtime track you on a galactic map and provide the save info in plain english formatted as well as provide a note pad function for coords except all you would have to do in the app is long hold to save your coords with any details attached.

Anybody interested in that? I could use that EMTOOL which needs updating as a base for an app.

yes
do it please. I want to be able to use my tablet as a MFD. make a server on the PC that the client on the tablet connects to, it'd be REAL simple, just serve the savedata.txt through an http pipe even, and manipulate it on the tablet. I used to code a long time ago, C, and did C++ in college but I'm so outta practice.

Sounds a little bit what Evometrics is in Mercenary. Works like a GPS to plot your position
in real time.

Sounds like a nice little gadget to me! ;-)

If you do create this gadget, is it possible to add a feature (DB) so you can add systems
you've found? Could it be made for the PC as well so it could be placed on my 2nd monitor? ;-)

That'd be useful for non-multi monitor setups :P Would it always display a galaxy map and depending on server settings show you other human locations?

Probably not since the only information you can get from the game is your own position, not others. To do that you need to be connected to the server with that software.

 I have an old iPhone ... first model. Pretty much useless since I made the mistake of trying to update Pandora. If you wrote this program, would it be backward compatible?

Wink wink, We could always update the DB for EL and use your existing DB with the app remote connecting to your DB less overhead on the device and people will get updates to the galactic map without needing to update the APP every other day. Food for thought my friend.

I have plenty of ideas and not enough time, one major project and a ton of learning to be had fun times :P

I don't see why it would not.. Compiling for IOS requires that you specify the minimum ISO version. I can't guarantee as I have limited knowledge of IOS and ANDROID coding wise. I am not even sure uploading to the app store is possible for IOS without a fee I think last I checked it was like $200 for a dev licence.

However for you savvy folks who love jailbreaking and rooting you could always install the app circumventing the checks.

For android users you can do this without a root enabled device you just need to go under the security settings and enable "unknown sources" this will allow installing APK files from storage memory.. the app I believe still has to be signed.

It can be done.. However the server operator will need to be willing to host a mysql server with remote connection for anonymous login aka MYSQL with the wild card * used for the incoming IP allowed to connect" the database would need to be updated from the universe.txt file which is where the quadrant map in 3D mode comes from maybe if vice is really really nice he might give the source for how it reads that and then it can be used to create gather dll for the database.

The operators would have to manually submit the database's connection details to us for adding to the apps server list and then presto you get real time quadrants for MP albeit quite complicated.

GameNote 1.3 released. Added options for changing the font (cosmetic only, main work file content unaffected), option for user to invert colors with black text on white background, open the work folder base so the old work file can quickly be located in the event of an upgrade that changes the internal versioning number. Also added an option on the File Menu to create a desktop shortcut. New version can be downloaded by clicking here.
