The EM MODS Hall Of Fame

Post by Keitarooo »

As a johnny-come-lately, I had some trouble finding all the mods in those 26 pages of history :) I'm sure I missed some !

What do you think guys of making a sticky post with the list of all released MOD for EM ? I searched the forum but could not find one (I'm sure some people thought about that before), so please forgive me if such a page already exists...

We could sort them for easier finding, like : HUD, COCKPIT, MISCELLANELOUS, etc... with link to the mod thread. Like a giant index.

If some people are interested, and, most important, if you think it could be useful, I would be glad doing it.

This is the old one: http://www.starwraith.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8676

I think there's a newer version, but it's not in my list.

This might be the "latest" version: http://www.starwraith.com/forum/viewtop ... #pid164711

DaveK took over Viper's version ... but it looks like Dave could use some help.

P.S. Check the first post.

The forum isn't really designed for maintaining lists like this so I started a Word Doc version - the idea was to have it posted to download and keep it up to date! I also started collecting all the mods I could get my hands on so they didn't disappears if a player stopped hosting them - at the moment it's 4Gb+. I also got sidetracked trying to test which are EM, EMII and EM+EMII compatible as requested!

A list be itself isn't as useful as it might be - names like 'Vipers HUD/HUD(1)/HUD(2)/Perch don't make it easy to choose! - so I started a 'catalogue' with an illustration of each 'pure' HUD, (to also include star fields, nebulae, asteroids, maps etc)though I know many people have produced their own customised HUD's using a pick&mix approach. Loading a HUD, loading the game, getting a picture, leaving the game ... rinse and repeat - and try to find the original creator(s) to acknowledge (especially difficult if it was a pick&mix)

The whole project started to feel that it was more effort than it was worth since players appeared to settle on a HUD and other bits they liked and perhaps modded the HUD a bit and then stuck with it, so I wondered about zipping the whole lot of mods divided in folders or perhaps creating an ISO file and posting it on SeeJay's website. - though 4Gb might be too much of an imposition

Anyway, the project slipped further down my EM to-do-list and since no-one grumbled ('til now :P) it never bubbled back up again! The number of new mods for EMII seems to have nearly dried up and no-one seems to be playing EM so perhaps a file list of EMII compatible mods (Doc or PDF??) + zipped download/ISO might be manageable.

If there's a demand I can cobble something together : HUDs - maps - music - asteroids - trees - cities - cap ship and merc ship frames - sounds - stars fields - nebulae - rings - affichage.jpg - tractor beams - jump effects - misc (like big radar/station forcefields/chat text positions/showing shield strength % and/or ship location in the HUD) - utilities (like Travel Buddy/Evometrics/ANNA (voice operated control of most aspects of your ship with a chatty AI!)

Let me know what you think :)

Wow, nice work Dave !
What did Viper is huge work too.

I'll try to comment, step by step.

It depends, if it's only categories (hud, cockpit, ...) with links, a sticky forum post is enough.
For more details, more pagination, a word file is better indeed. But having to download it is not really practical. Why not uploading it to google Docs so it's viewable online, without any software ? (and easier to edit with multiple people).

I had the same idea, haha ! I think it's nice to do that. Checking for compatibility must be a pain though...

Yes you are right, screenshots sells mods :p People won't install random. The first time I saw the Perch cockpit + a custom HUD (youtube video), oh my... I was sold ! But I wouldn't had the idea to test each mod to find a good one, indeed...

Yes, so little players, so much efforts. Not worth the time, imho

You speak the truth :)

Here are some ideas :

1)Maybe just having an online MOD list, with links to originals forum posts and, if we can get some without too much hassle, some screenshots, would be enough for newcomers.
And most important, this list should be sticky on the MOD sub-forum, so newbie like me would find them easily, and the time spent building this list would not be wasted and burried down the forum.

2) I could make a "STEAM GUIDE" on STEAM, in english. For those who don't know, it's something the steam community can see when browsing the specific game on steam, and can easily read.
It even have a "mod" category. I did it with the french translation (made by FTH team), so more people could see it.

This is something which would be useful, along with a Steam FAQ. The Steam version of EM is relatively new and it's the new players who buy and install the game via Steam. Consequently, when questions come up which are peculiar to Steam (mostly concerning where to put mods in a Steam install), answers are slow in coming.

Great idea to put a EM guide on Steam. There's a big community there who would potentially be interested in EM. Would be a good way to drawn in new players.

Any ideas on which guides to do ? (I mean, which topic to cover for each guide) ?

Thank you SeeJay for copy/pasting the whole index of Dave's Guide, haha !

More seriously, I see Caleb posted videos (in spanish) as guides in the "Steam Guide section". For Evochron basics it's a good idea.

Is it ok to embed (youtube link) the official tutorial videos Vice made ? I could make one steam guide for each video, so people can easily find them and learn, on steam.

You're welcome Keitaroo. You asked for suggestions and you got it LOL!;)

Shouldn't be any problems linking to Vice's videos, as long as he gets credit for them.
There are several tutorial videos on my site you could link to as well if you want.

Yes, I saw some redfalcon videos, and others. They are on YouTube as well.

I'll post a steam guide on how to install the nebula mod, soon.

I'm almost finished updating the Techy Guide to cover the enormous range of additions in Legacy ... once players stop asking Vice to make major changes (all hail the INDependent 'faction' and the Jump Caster). ;D ;D

What I need to know is whether anyone uses ANNA in (or even know if it will work with) Legacy? The original post by Galaxian, ANNA's creator, is
http://www.starwraith.com/forum/viewtop ... hilit=ANNA
It works in EM and in addition to files provided by Galaxian ANNA uses : ANNA is a voice activated command (VAC) mod that responds to hundreds of voice commands (and you have several ways of saying the same thing) and replies appropriately from a large array of responses.

It's one of the coolest mods you can get ... Cortana before Cortana was snaffled from HALO ... you can almost abandon your keyboard and stick! But if it doesn't work in Legacy, it'll remain in the Mercenary version of the Guide :)
