I couldn't find anything on this but I wanted to decrease the time from 500 to 60 seconds... is there a way to do this? I tried to edit the text2.dat file but it made no difference.

Line 953 is the one you want, which is in milliseconds. The lowest value you can set is 100000 in that line, which is roughly 100 seconds, a little over a minute and a half. The default value is 1800000, or about 30 minutes.

Thanks, I have changed it to 100000.
Is there a reason why that is the lowest setting?

It's a safety minimum for reliable operation. Saving too often can potentially cause excessive delays during large save operations which can potentially cause problems like dropped players, particularly with the full chatlog mode active (which if you have enabled, you'll want to make sure that file doesn't get too big, more than 1 or 2 MB's, by backing it up periodically and allowing the server program to start with a new file).
