Anti Ad/virus software?

Post by SeeJay »

Hi all.

It seems that I've picked up a virus. Ad's pop up every now and then.
Also "Scanning for Virus" software pops up all the time.

I have no idea how I got it. My kids also use the computer, so that might be it!:o

Anyone knows about any good, free, scan/removal software?

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

Due to the nature of these things, I suggest you start here http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/ as it has many resources and I use it from time to time.

Malwarebytes is one of the best and even Microsoft Malware Removal Tool is pretty good too.

Also SpyBot Search and Repair is good but I think it can take longer to scan than MalwareBytes.
They all three release updated Libraries and can automatically or manually check for updates when you run them.
They are not backround, "run all the time" programs (unless you install the background utilities of SpyBot), but are "Run on Demand".

All are free (or have free versions).
I like MalwareBytes and MS MRT.

I used the free version of AVG for a long time - and then bought the Pro version just so I can sort out automatic scan times and exactly when each of the double handful of partitions on my twin 2TB drives need scanning. Worth the $$ - and certainly worth it for the free version

I also use Spywareblaster (free) as a back ground protection and Super Antispyware (free) as a regular clean up tool. CCleaner (free) finishes the armoury.

Vice told me about Malwarebytes anti-malware and I use Spybot also. I had the same thing on my machine. After I ran both programs I have not had the problem (yet) return.

I had a program that would NOT un-install called "Shop-wit.exe" even using a power uninstall program. I finally traced it back to its location and deleted manually. The program seems to allow other spam type to load.

Thanks guys.

I'll try it out this weekend. If all fails I'll just wipe the hard-drive and start from scratch.:P

No wait !
Did you think about system restore ?
If you're running Windows, that's to try before reformatting !
Type system restore in your start menu search window, the wizard takes you through the recovery of the last snapshot of your machine, or you can select an older one.

Upon reboot, you end up with your config the way it was at the date/time of snapshot.

That got me out of trouble like that a couple of times already.

Good luck !

Thanks Beta, but that doesn't work (Tried it). The only reset point is after the virus was installed. Only one available.

I'll try the above programs this weekend and format if it doesn't work. No worries. I've done it many
times before. Especially when running win 98 2nd edition LOL! Blue-screen every week! :D

I've learned from the past and have most stuff on another drive. Just reinstall the OS and a few programs/drivers and I'll be up and
running in no time.;)

Cheers. 2 hrs of work left and then I'm off to a Swedish Kräftskiva! (Crayfish Party) Specialty in August here.

Since I've been messing with some Midi related software and downloads lately I've come to the conclusion that from time to time I will manually go in and Create a System Restore point.

Of course you can do that everytime you or family gets in the internet. But point it you may not want to just rely on Windows natural creation of restore point since as you see, there may not be any far enough back to help. You might have to change System Restore's setting to allow more (older) points to be available.

I think what ever got SeeJay (and myself) deleted the prior restore points as neither of us could do a prior restore.

It looks like, after many hours of work with all the programs suggested above, that I managed to get rid
of all my problems without having to format my C drive.

Best forum ever. THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP.

I would kiss ya all right on the mouth if I could.;)

One happy camper! ;)

My joy disn't last very long. Problems came back.

C drive wiped. Reinstalled Win7. Can't get online. WiFi works but I think I'll need to update BIOS via another computer. So, I'm off the grid for the time beeing.

:o Sorry to hear that, SeeJay. Makes me appreciate having a daughter who is an expert in that kind of stuff. She just goes into "safe" mode and clears it all away.

I tried that as well Marv. Only worked for 2 days and then it was back.
Now I get the message: "Windows did not detect any networking hardware" Guess I need to update BIOS or something.

I think I would try downloading new drivers for your wireless card and try that.
If still problem go in Device Manager and remove the wireless adapter and reboot and redect it or read add it if not detected.
Then Installed the new drivers again.
I'm assuming the Wireless is the only problem you are having.
You could also check your motherboard on Asus web site or new drivers.
I would not do a bios update unless you have been having problems all along or you are pretty sure there is a reason you need to.
It's not generally a recommended thing to do by MB manufacturers unless you have been having problems - or that's how it's been in the past.

Back online! ;)

Thanks for all the tips.

I went to my neighbour and downloaded drivers for my network card and that did the trick!

Now I'm working on updating everything and reconfigure it as it was.
Will work on that all day tomorrow.

Keep in mind that, when Windows creates a new restore point, it might also make a copy of the virus for restoration. Which could be why things seem okay ... for a couple days. :o
