App Programmer wanted!

Post by SeeJay »

Hi all.

Late this past summer I joined the Swedish Sea Rescue as a voluntary crew member on
the station where I live. We are on call 24/7 on a weekly basis (every 3rd week) whenever
someone is in distress at sea.

What I've noticed is this.
We have a pager when on duty that calls us in whenever there is an emergency that
endangers someones life (SAR mission) and we have to leave port within 15 min after
the emergency call. However, when the emergency isn't (yet) endangering someones life,
such as electric failure, engine failure, grounding (correct term??) etc, we still need to leave
port within 15 min, but only our skipper gets the emergency call. He/She then calls one
of us and he/she continues the call list to bring us all in. This is time consuming and
very ineffective. Every second counts when anyone is in distress.

My idea is to create an app that works for both iPhone and Android.
The skipper clicks on "ALARM" and the app sends a text message to all crew members
and triggers the wake up alarm on the phone, even if it's set to silent.
The crew members clicks on "CONFIRM" and a text message is returned to the
skipper that we are on the way. This way the skipper has more time to gather all
information needed regarding the distress and the crew can focus on getting ready
and start the engines on our units so we can leave port when the skipper arrives.

I'm currently working on the Specs for the app but I do not have the knowledge to create the
app itself. The purpose is not to earn any money on the app, so I can't offer any
money to anyone that creates the app, but adding some advertisement to promote
the programmer is an option of course.

Anyone interested in such a project?

App Programmer wanted!

Sorry I can't help practically, but it sounds like an excellent idea. When you get it sorted I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't get used by sea rescue and mountain rescue organisations Europe wide!

Like many brilliant ideas it sounds obvious when you hear about it but the fact you're seeking a programmer shows it isn't obvious at all! :D
