Game timing extremely slow and/or indicated frames per second too high on older AMD Dual Core Processors...

Post by Vice »

Symptom and Effected Systems:

This problem may occur on some unpatched older AMD dual core CPU's (ie Athlon 64 X2 3800), generally running Windows XP. The symptom is an extremely slow game pace and high indicated frames per second (when holding the '~' tilde key or scroll lock). It may appear like the game is running in slow motion. The problem may be intermittent and change after rebooting the system.

Cause:

The root cause of the problem comes from certain timing conditions on the older CPU's that make them not fully compatible with the newer Windows API timing system used in more recent builds of the game for improved accuracy and performance. Newer multi-core AMD processors are not effected (and older single core processors are also not effected).

Solution:

Simply apply the patches below for these processors to correct the invalid timing behavior. This solution will also solve the problem for other games using the more current timing system.

Download and install the AMD Processor Driver Version 1.3.2.0053 for Windows XP:

Download and install the AMD Dual-Core Optimizer version 1.1.4:
