Am I such a bad pilot?

I have a serious problem:
In Mission 4 (attack fed convoy) I close in. The I select the fed Wraith as primary target and order my squad to attack. That works perfectly. Then I select the nearest fighter and again order my squad to attack. Before they turn on the target they are all shot down in a matter of less than thirty seconds and I am on my own. I manage to last somewhat longer until the Vonari arrive. All heck breaks loose and in a matter of seconds my fighter is history without even a chance to fire a single shot at the enemy. Now I have two questions:

1. Why are my wingmen THAT incompetent (or should I order something else)?

2. What can I do as soon as the Vonari arrive?

edited due to wording!

In mission 4, its best to just sit back and watch the show. It is a "special" mission in several regards.

Where shall I wait to avoid destruction?

This one is easier then you think!

***************Spoiler Alert************
You can even order your wingmen to stay at the carrier and fly slowly to the way point and stay out of enemies firing range and just watch the show from a save distance!.....;):P:cool:

 I usually set a waypoint on the other side of the sector and order my wingmen to wait there. Then I cautiously make my way toward the battle area ... staying far enough from the enemy to keep out of sight. Until the Vonari show up. Then I get just close enough to watch the Feds and the Vons go to it. It's also the only time I use the V key to see better.

I just bought AA, and boy is it more difficult than evochron. I've done mission 1 to 5, and in the last 2, I just lost all my squad mates in the first battle, and had to kill everything myself on my own. :p

 Keep an eye on the fleet and send them back to reload and refuel whenever necessary. If they keep getting into trouble, send them off to hold somewhere out of harm's way. Whatever you do, don't launch a missile near battle's end.

If only I could choose what cannon I could pick. I'd get the C1 every time :P.

 Your choices are limited ... but they increase as you progress through the missions.

hopeful the AI will get an update , the new ones tend to stay back instead of flying in on IDS while browsing on their phone. I finished it but did notice it does matter which ships they use , even if your past it , i hope other people will realize that the battles greatly hing on your skill and kills.

 Be careful what you wish for. The AI have learned to use afterburner and seldom trail far behind your ship as you attempt to extend out of the fight.

ive learned they run away much more effectively now as well , its fun to have battles vary when reinforcements show up. Its all for the best im my opinion.

It's easier than any of the above pilots ;) Your ship doesn't have to move! I started the mission after reading only Nemesis' introductory question, not reading the replies. After launch while still in the hanger going over the Commands and Tactical console (I really thought that it would be a very difficult mission), I started receiving comms from Beta squad destroying the convoy while dogfighting the 24 Vonari escorts, and suddenly the briefing for Mission 5 pops up stating "You're lucky to have survived." Way to go Vice. Innovative and Brilliant! Only when I returned to this thread did I realize that the 4th mission is one of Vice's "Surprises" as a metaphor for real life: "Nothing is ever as it seems."
