use your tractor beam ( default 'b' I think)

Get Close to mine but don't hug it....LOL, sweep your beam across it and you will fill your bays faster

You don't grab the asteroid, you'll just mine 'particles', 'shards' or 'dust' of it, that'll be stored in your bay.
