Gameplay Tips and Tactics...

Post by Vice »

Feel free to add more tips and tactics to this thread.

- It can be pretty easy to lose track of your wingmen (human or AI), especially in a large battle with 16-20 ships. Try to stay together as a group, work as a team, and communicate. Try not to let the hostile ships pull you away from each other as that makes you an easier target (and it is one of the many tactics AI ships use against you). Instead, remain within about 3000 of your fellow wingmen at all times and watch each other's backs. If you're commanding AI ships in your squadron, give orders to keep them close and focus attacks on one or two ships at a time when appropriate. If you're flying with either human or AI wingmen, watch your radar and remain aware of the direction and distance of your wingmen so if you lose track of one, you know which direction to turn to rejoin. Open space can be fairly disorienting at times, so use your horizon ladders and compass to assist in keeping track.

- Use zero gravity to your advantage. Be ready to turn off the IDS and slide diagonally or fly backwards while maintaining an attack on your target. Apply intertial thrusters as needed to keep a hostile ship from obtaining a successful attack angle on you (such as directly behind or ahead of your path of movement).

- Use distance to your advantage. AI ships will use all of their thrusters to make it difficult for your gunfire to hit them. Do the same. Try to keep an attacking ship at a distance of at least 250-400 or more and fire your intertial thrusters while performing hard turns/spirals to make it difficult for your attacker's MDTS system to track your ship's movements. The farther away from your attacker you are, the more time you have to evade gunfire and the less effective your attacker's MDTS will be.

-Choose your ship carefully. The recommended ships aren't necessarily the best ones for you to use. If you are having a hard time completing a mission using one of the heavier ships, try using a more maneuverable one like an Evoch, or vice versa.

-Don't constantly reload your missiles. It's easy for enemy ships to damage you when you're sitting on top of a Cruiser. It's best to wait for a lull in the fight, or when there aren't many reds near you.

-When you need to pick up some kind of object, or possibly one of your wingmen' ejection pods, don't fly too fast or you could get killed crashing into it. If you have to fly fast because of nearby reds, be ready to use your thrusters to avoid hitting it.

-When attacking large ships like Cruisers, getting directly above or below makes it harder for them to shoot at you.
-Also, an easy way to take out a large ship is to slide around it in a circle with the IDS off using your thrusters to maneuver. Using missiles combined with your cannons will help destroy it quickly.

- Always approach carriers from below and/or behind. This area is a nearly impossible angle to hit for them. Try disabling them and have your wingmen keep opposition away. Usually the use of missiles will make your work a lot easier.

- Don't forget: Fulcrum Jump Drive depletes your shield. Tactically plan and use your Fulcrum Drive.

- For the advanced player, Fulcrum Torpedo's detonate on impact on any object. Try using asteroid field to your advantage.

- Watch out with the Excalibur pack. The missiles will target the next target, even if it's green (if there are no reds left).

- Try learning which ships are a direct threath to your mission. In most missions, this can give you an edge over the opposition.

- Nebulae are hard to fight in as they are disorientating and disabling. For missions that take place in dense nebula clouds, try avoiding wasting time with dogfights. It might just be that a large group of hostile fighters is about to pop up on radar.

- Use your squadron: Check what mission it is. Escort? Attack? How many enemies are coming in? What is the objective? Do you need firepower or speed? Are the hostiles fast or strong? Bombers or interceptors? Adapt your weaponry to this, adapt your ships to this. Learn to quickly give orders - set macro's to your joystick for making them attack hostile targets, having them reload and things. Make sure you learn that interface just so that you waste as little time as possible.

- Learn how to use the more powerful cannons. When you fight with a Banshee, it teaches you to make every shot count - because you energy levels get depleted much faster.
Using a high-level cannon also helps you stay alive longer, since you can destroy enemy ships much more quickly - depleting their shield arrays with many fewer shots than a lower-level cannon.

- A good tactic when using a high-powered cannon(or any cannon really) is to stay as close as you can to the ship you are targetting and keep your ship aligned with theirs. This will help you aim more accurately.

-you can improve your ability to stay close to a ship by hitting the 'm' key, this will match you speed with your targets speed, using your afterburners to get a little bit closer with this can be a deadly technique. Watch your radar for other enemy ships as this can also make you an easy target. and is not always such a good technique against human players

Countering missiles:

- You can bait hostile ships into wasting all of their missiles and running out. Just stay away from a hostile firing missiles at you, at a distance of at least 1000.

- Don't fly directly in toward hostile ships, this leaves you and your counter-measures little time to react to fast flying missiles.

- Watch the yellow inbound missile blips on the radar, turn away from them and then use counter-measures.

- Launch counter-measures early, then worry about fine tuning your tactics later on to avoid wasting them. Start launching counter-measures when the distance bar is still pretty long, then hold the counter-measure key/button down until you hear the missile explode. Work on distance timing from there.

- Don't fly slow. It gives your enemy more time to obtain a missile lock at a longer range. They will often fire more missiles at you if you're slow and don't move around much.

- Don't fly in a straight line for very long, vary your flight path frequently to make it more difficult for your opponent(s) to obtain a missile lock.

- If you're struggling with counter-measures, just shoot down incoming missiles until you improve your abilities.

head straight at you opponent and don't worry about their range, you'll knock out any missiles, even with MDTS turned on.... this is good if your already heading in a similar direction when they fire the missile at you..

if your facing away from a missile hit your afterburner, it'll give both you and your Counter measures extra time.........
