New to Evochron and Arvoch? Here is some help to get you started...

Post by Vice »

This post has been updated to provide information relevant to the latest games in each series, Evochron Legacy SE and Arvoch Alliance SE.

If you are new to Evochron and Arvoch, these steps will help make the process of learning the games faster and easier:

Configure Controls
- Configuring controls is an important initial step as it allows you to select the device(s) you want to use with the game and customize key and/or buttons mappings. The first step you'll want to complete is choosing what control mode type you want use for flying your ship in the game. This is available in the main Options menu from the game's main menu and is also available in the Axis Configuration menu next to the 'Flight Control Type:' listing. Once you click on the button displaying the current mode next to that listing, a drop-down menu will appear and display the available modes. You can select a Mouse mode with different options for the X axis (default yaw on X or optional 'Roll X') and Y axis (optional 'Rev Y' to reverse the input on Y). A pointer mode and a direction mode are available. You can also limit flight control input to the keyboard only if you prefer. Or lastly, you can enable the 'Joystick/Controller' flight control mode to use any compatible game control device your system may have for flight control. If you enable a mouse or the joystick/controller mode, you can optionally map button inputs in the 'Key/Button Configuration' menu. Additionally, if you select the joystick/controller mode, you can map axis inputs and POV/HAT inputs to various controls as well. More information on the control configuration options is available in the instructions included with the game or in this thread on the forum: viewtopic.php?f=26&t=4651

Instructions
- One of the best resources on getting started are the instructions included with the games. To view those, you can open the 'ReadMe.htm' document located in the game's install folder. You can also access the instructions from within the games via the training menu ('Close game and view instructions' option). You can also view them online here: https://www.starwraith.com/evochronlega ... readme.htm (Evochron Legacy SE) and here: https://www.starwraith.com/arvochallian ... readme.htm (Arvoch Alliance SE) The instructions include important basic information such as controlling your ship, managing systems, cockpit indicator details, and early gameplay guidance.

Training
- Once you've reviewed the instructions, the next step is completing the interactive training mode. This option lets you try out what you've learned from the instructions, providing a hands-on way to learn the basics of the games. The training mode covers important concepts such as handling your ship, managing the consoles, firing weapons, managing shields, and more.

There is a lot more in terms of advanced gameplay tactics and options. But once you've reviewed the instructions and completed the training basics, you should be ready to take on the game's universe as a independent mercenary/trader pilot (Evochron) or a military combat fighter pilot (Arvoch).

Navigation
By intended design and capability, navigation is one of the more challenging aspects of the game's learning curve. Unlike navigation systems that may be commonly found in other space game's, Evochron and Arvoch employ a fully open space 3D navigation system that is sector-centric (meaning a consistent centering pattern tied to the coordinate system). The navigation system is designed to work with and plot waypoints in the open 3D environment of space. This means objects can be above or below your position as well as to one side, ahead, or behind. So it's important to learn how to read the navigation map and manage its control systems in all three directions. The official SW3DG YouTube channel provides a tutorial on learning the navigation system (for Evochron at the link below) and the instructions at the links above also provide details.

For some players, with Evochron in particular which features a much larger multi-sector nav map structure, it may be challenging to break out of the 'single point' navigation systems often found in many space games to learn the 'any point' system in Evochron. To help make it easier to manage, use the 'Local Pts' buttons on the left side of the map in the navigation console. This way, you can select individual points of interest with one click as you would in a single point navigation system without having to contend with the any point open space plotting until you're ready.
