How gravity works (i think)

Gravity is applied to your ship as a position update just like velocity, but separate from it as it doesn't actually effect your velocity. From a game loop update sort of way of thinking, Your ship is translated directly towards the gravitational core as if you had a velocity that is 2/3 of the listed gravity value, then after that your ships velocity is applied on top. Both updates seem to occur in the same frame.

So, if you have a velocity directly away from a gravitational core that is 2/3 of the gravity value, the 2 updates cancel each other out and you maintain position.

I discovered this experimenting while refueling bone dry tanks in a stellar corona. With a gravity value of 1200 and a velocity of -800 i was able to sit for an extended period gathering fuel without the gravity value changing. It eventually dropped to 1199 and continued down extremely slowly thereafter. I had full tanks by the time it hit 1197.

Not that you'll ever need to be dead on here, just getting close will allow to avoid burning up/crashing long enough to fill up. Haven't bothered to check yet if this works the same for planets. Anyway, didn't see any other posts that described it in this way so I thought I'd share.

I got into this predicament by running out of gas. I managed to get myself within 4 sectors of a star, with 8 units of fuel left. Plotted my jump into the corona for a refuel..... but after having been max jumping for so long, i accidentally pressed alt F2 :(. That left me 4 sectors away on the wrong side, heading away from it, and with only 3 units of fuel left. I probably should have loaded a save... but my last save was way back so.... "refuel challenge accepted!". I came to a stop, pointed myself at the star, and burned the tanks dry. Took a long time to get there, and consequently a very long time to refuel. The moral of this story is, get a constructor cheapskate so you can build something to refuel from (also save more often)!

Hi Rags, welcome to the game and forum!.....Hope to see you out there some time!.....;)
Thanks for sharing your refueling story and info on thow the gravity works near stars. That is exactly how I experienced gravity around stars in the game!....;)
