Questions from a Pissed off Noob

Okay, so I have to say, so far I love this game but there are some simple things that are really pissing me off.
The first thing is that, most of the really simple stuff I'm looking for answers to I can't find anything about.
Like for instance, it took me forty five minutes to figure out what a mining probe was because there just literally is no description of what it is anywhere. I finally found some info on it when I stumbled across a page describing how to use the deploy mjigger.
Yet there are literally thousands of pages about space combat, and I still get owned every time I try to fight even just 1 ship.

So I have a list of questions that I can't find answers to and I'm hoping someone can help me because, for the first time ever, the internets and google have failed me.

1. Answering a distress call. I know how to do the materials ones where you deliver stuff to a planet, but I tried to do a rescue a pilot and I arrived on location with 100 seconds to spare... but there were four ships. How do I find which ship to rescue? How do I rescue them? Like... how do I do this one?

2. Is there some list somewhere that has descriptions of what things are AND what they do like mining probe: a deployable object that mines asteroids.

3. Where are these supposed pure platinum asteroids?
I read somewhere that supposedly everyone uses the same universe file, and that therefore, all objects in the game are in the same locations, yet I can't find a single site anywhere that I can just look up the locations of things.

4. What faction/guild/group am I?
I thought I was navy, but sometimes navy are yellow, sometimes red, sometimes green. SO whadda? Am I some other faction?
Can I change this faction/guild/group? How? Where?

5. Is there a map or list or something somewhere that will tell me which systems are full of enemies and which one aren't?

6. I keep reading about "warfronts" where are these?

7. How do I get a military ship?
can I have more than one ship?
How?

8. Also, kind-of-sort-of a question but not.
Other than planets and stuff near the jump gates, every sector seems completely empty which is super discouraging to "exploration" because I have no idea whether this empty area is the same empty area I just looked at two jumps ago. So Like I want to FIND hidden planets but its incredibly boring and discouraging jumping around empty sectors finding nothing... not even new asteroids.. just nothing. Am i missing something? is my game broke?

I know some of these things are probably answered somewhere else, but I'm getting pretty frustrated that I just dropped some of what little cash I have on this game and I end up spending 80%+ of my time with the game minimized while i search for answers online. I mean, the in game tutuorials WERE really helpful, but only to a point. Yet some of the game seems really flawed. Like i've played some MMO's and one really simple feature that is missing from this game is just simple descriptions for items. Its super frustrating to have to google what a really simple item is just because the game doesn't have an in game description.
I'm fascinated with the mechanics of the game but these really simple things are becoming a huge detriment. Like I'm on the verge of just deleting the whole thing and forgetting about it.

Any how, thanks in advance for the help, and sorry about the rant :D

Hello Arammil, first of all, this Sim can be a steep learning curve for some players. What seems impossible today will, I can assure you, will be mundane later. If you can jump onto MP for help with your questions as it is not a kill or be killed environment like some Sims. Welcome to the forum and the Sim. Have fun and hope to see you in Multi-Player sometime.:)

Hi Arammil,

Welcome from one noob to another. I have only been playing for about a month, and there is a great deal to learn, but it becomes easier as you go along, and after awhile you realize that, much like life, not everything is written down in advance.

The link Marvin sent you is very good. I read through it often. Another good one is the Evochron Legends Strategy Guide. While some new stuff may be missing, it is very very useful.

You can also check Seejay's Evochron Web Site which is a pretty amazing resource.

As far as pure platinum asteroids, well, I haven't found those yet. But I have found some mining drills which are for specific elements.

My best suggestion is that you save things often, and experiment. That way if things go wrong, you can always go back and do it again.

Oh, and ask lots of questions too. The guys here are great. Very helpful and friendly.

Good luck

Jerry

Best thing you can do is jump into multiplayer and have someone show you the ropes. The folks here are very friendly and willing to help. Me, for instance. There's no worry about getting ganked in MP, this game isn't like that. Unless you WANT to be ganked in MP, but that's a whole different discussion for another thread. ;)

One replier said the game can be a steep learning curve for some. I think that's being very conservative. It seems to be a steep learning curve for most.

For the first two or three hours of playing, after my demo time was up and I had purchased the game I was pretty much clueless. Even after that, I still sucked at combat.

Now don't get me wrong here. I didn't know everything after 2 hours. I didn't even know much. But the light had gone on and I had a handle on it. Heck, I don't know everything now. I'm still sort of a noob myself.

IF you think this is bad, try flight school. Or what the astronauts at NASA go through.

Nothing comes immediately. It takes time. Fortunately, learning the ins and outs of this game is much easier that it would be in real life. In real life you would have had to go through a spacecraft pilots program for 6 months to 2 years to get your Mercenary Pilot's License before they would even sell you a ship.

But when the realizaiton comes, it is sweet. I just made it to Sol. Had to fly straight there from Sirius with about 300 or so Mantis drive jumps. (Thank the Almighty Vice for the autopilot).

I still haven't been able to find Uranus and Pluto. I'm sure they are there, but they are most likely 20 or 30 sectors out, or maybe that much above or below the eliptic. Space is VAST!!

I did some figuring and my computations (which I could have messed up) show that the game universe here is at least 1600 cubic light years. That's a LOT of space.

And thanks to Marvin for the Universe.htm link.

Janus...you know that there's a faster way to Sol, right? You probably do. I'm just saying, space nerf jerky gets old after a few weeks of fulcruming it from one end of the galaxy to the other.

How exactly do you come across this knowledge? Is this a well-kept secret on this forum? I certainly would like to know. :)

Hi amtie and welcome.

There are many Blackholes and Wormholes out there. They are on the map when you find them,
but they are not published. Explorers have found them and we spread it via in game chat or here in the forum.

I created my website to get all this information in one place. You can find it there.
Check the Uncharted Gates section here: http://www.evochron.junholt.se/

mercenary is the latest release in a long series of starwraith games.
most knowledge is learned and passed on from one game to the next.

for example; legends has a quest that leads you to riftspace, but there is no mention of it in mercenary so you only know its there if you played legends already.

like starting to watch a movie half way thru and trying to figure out whats already going on.

I started in legends and learned everything by forums, guides and most important MP
all the help you ever wanted is on MP just ask

Nope, I didn't. Told you I was still a noob. Right now, I've pretty much given up on looking for the outer planets and am looking for a wormhole or such to get me back to civilization.

And just to be clear, I have found no wormholes. I did find a black hole. Tried flying into it to see if it would take me anywhere. It did. Straight back to my last save:D

But no worries. I'll figure it out. I've heard there's a jumpole or 3 in the one of the sol systems. I'll find 'em.

Trust me this is an easy fun game. Just jump into multiplayer ask questions, ask to run coop missions to make some money and buy a military frame and pvp (fight) your friend or enemy. This game is addicting. Use team speak or the in game chat rather then text messages.
The little money you spent was worth the constant hours of fun you will have. If you want to mine, explore or trade this game does that. Guys like SeeJay, Rubber Chicken, Captain Cronic, Flash, King Arthur, Hawkeye, Marvin, Bush, Miaz and SeT will always help you. Just ask. Multi-player is my preference because you have good guys like these that will help you.

 The wormhole in Sol is no secret ... it's very, very close to the Sun (and getting through it in one piece is an accomplishment in itself). As for Riftspace, you can find it as part of the Quest for Peace (the current method of scripting a quest doesn't allow for some of the messaging of earlier Evochron games).

I lost my wallet in Rift space. It's orange. Has the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on it. Please return if found.

 I hear some guy from a nearby planet (either in Riftspace or the wormhole/gate) found it. But that's only a rumor.

It has my lucky three leaf clover in it. Only six billion in existence. It's a collector's item from Earth. You know, before the ring.

You use fulcrum? That's still the easy way imo.
But I agree, the learning curve is extremely steep, and the game being less than popular (and therefore having few players) makes asking for help less easy.
